This is my current set up not including my cardio stuff Treadmill, recumbent bike and upright bike. There are a few things to consider. Cable machines need to glide smoothly so if you can test them before you buy them that is great, or simply search them and ask questions. Stay out of Sport Authority & Dicks. I have had good luck shopping on line but I also have a warehouse to receive my delivery & that is a big deal with gym equipment. Consider power blocks or something similar for dumbbells because of space issues, there is never enough room. Chose your pieces wisely & chose quality over quantity. Wt equipment will last forever so buy what you want the 1st time because you will not likely upgrade what you all ready have. Don't shoot from the hip & buy something because it looks trick. Put some real thought into it, consider your space & the space you need for floor work.
•Consider your space and plan it out, draw a picture or use a program
•Make a list of all the pieces you think you want or need
•Buy quality equipment, start with the basics and go as far as you budget allows
•Research the pieces you think you want. Public gyms and private gyms are not made of the same equipment. You cannot really design a private gym after public gym. They are 2 different animals
•Stick with the Plan
This program might help in your layout

Well there is a set of 90 pound Power Blocks there and I also have 5 pair of adjustable standard spin locks. There are 3 pair in the plate rack @ the ez curl station & the are the heaver ones I use for pullovers on the floor near the power rack.
By the way that link is great for more than just building a gym. it does every room in your house. you can rearrange you furniture on the computer before you actually physically move it.
