I have read some people saying that it is needed to comply with the ADA - but clearly nobody in a wheelchair would be able to use the escalator. It seems to me that an elevator would be more useful for handicapped persons. The only thing that could justify it is if 24 hr fitness simply leased the space and the escalator was there before they moved in. But I won't be surprised if they put it in - pretty sad but nothing surprises me anymore in this regard.

ADA isn't just about people in wheel chairs, it's also people with canes or other walking impairments (along with many other disabilities). If you look at the sign to the right of the escalator is says something about and upper level access for handicapped being located somewhere else.

My point is that people with physical disabilities are better served wtih an elevator, not an escalator. The escalator in the picture has no redeeming value in a place ostensibly serving to improve the physical health of its customers.
