Originally posted by Scrumhalf View PostWell, the US joining in 1941 decidedly changed the course of the war and made the outcome inevitable, but my hat is off to the British for holding the fort in the 1st 2.5 years of the war against incredible odds. I have total respect for the British troops - they got their rear ends kicked in the initial few months until Dunkirk but I think the British bulldog was awakened during the Battle of Britain and they battled on essentially alone while the US dithered (of course, American material help was key in keeping Britain in the fight).
Hitler was a total military failure. I could go on and on about the dumb decisions he made. First, he chickened out and held back Guderian when the British were on the ropes at Dunkirk, and allowed the bulk of the troops to escape. Second, he should never have declared war on the US when Japan did. Biggest of all, Operation Barbarossa was a colossal screwup both in concept and execution, not to mention all the tactical errors he made in the Russian winter.
I think the biggest question is whether Germany would have developed an atomic bomb if the US hadn't joined the war when it did. If they had done so, the outcome would definitely be different. If not, IMHO the Russians would have defeated Germany regardless of whether the Americans joined or not, as long as Lend Lease was in place.

one thing that is funny about hitler, well not really funny..
is that many of the things he hated.. he was.
he hated disease... he had many.
he wanted his country full with one kind of people, "the master race"... he was lacking in many of these characteristics.
he had mental and physical problems and weakness and yet he hated those that had the same.
he hated addiction and those who used drugs. and yet his doctors pumped him full of all kinds of drugs all the time. he was a full blown addict.
there is also talk of a relationship that he had with a cousin and a younger boy...
i believe he hated himself and through some nutty way of thinking he took that out on the jews and the weak..

So I'm reading this one which seemed to get the best reviews;
Mein Kampf: Adolf Hitler: Amazon.co.uk: Books
The guy was clever no doubt and but I'm only on page 44 of 600something and you can already see his prejudice, you can see what it was bourne out of (Napoleons domination of Austria, the subsequent loss of identity, gap between rich and poor and lack of sharing etc etc) its actually quite funny in parts already I'm really enjoying it, you can see where he is talking generally and then goes off at a tangent on one subject and it seems that he goes into so much detail its out of context with the thread of the chapter, definately not all there and obsessive
At the same time though, I'm just watching Hitler's Henchmen on Discovery, they're talking about how the kids in prison camps were used for SS doctors medical experiments, one guy recounts how he and his brother had their necks injected with something that made their throat swell and they still cannot speak to this day, others had their hands and back sewn to other kids, they couldn't move and the wounds were dirty and full of puss left to fester, others are still disabled and epileptic from the trials, human bones were used as table legs in furniture, chairs made from human pelvis, lampshades from human skin and a copy of Mein Kampf made from human skin of human backs. It wasn't just Hitler that was an evil fuckLast edited by Mr I; 02-20-09, 05:49 AM.

This is a strong difference between a good leader and a good strategist. Hitler was an amazing strategist and held many the same beliefs as American presidents post World War I. He, however, was not a terrific leader. Great leaders do not desire power, in fact they march away from it. Most truly great leaders are people whose ideals thrust them to power, in most cases reluctantly. Strategists are leaders who use 'scheming' and strategy to gain the power they so greatly desire. Hitler was the latter. I did not read the entire thread, so if this is a repeat I am sorry...and keep it short.Originally posted by THE BOUNCER View Postfalse.
no matter how evil he was. no matter how many people he killed. you need to take your personal hate for him out of the arguement. to rise to that kind of power from a lowly wounded soldier in world war 1 makes him a great leader. the term "great leader" does not distinguish between bad and good.
'Hitler', in the sense of the man we know, was born power due to his countries failings. Germany was in terrible condition. Germans needed a leader and someone to blame for their problems, much like Americans blame illegal immigrants and Arabs for many of our problems.

when you can make so many people believe in what you believe and follow your cause. you are a great leader.Originally posted by NewbieChris View PostThis is a strong difference between a good leader and a good strategist. agreed, but in the end he failed, so no matter which way you cut it its hard to compliment him on any of his traitsOriginally posted by NewbieChris View PostThis is a strong difference between a good leader and a good strategist.
