There's this vacuum pump that runs all the time in my equipment room that my desk is in kind a quite steady hum. And of course there is the distinct electrical hum of the 5,000 volt transformer right behind me. But, nothing really.

Marian Anderson was an African-American contralto who, despite her prodigious talent, was not allowed to study music at top music schools because they wouldn't admit non-whites. She still persevered and because an international sensation. However back home, she still had trouble getting recognized.

The Daughters of the American Revolution refused to allow her access to their hall for a concert. Neither did the Washington DC school district. This so enraged Eleanor Roosevelt that she convinced the authorites to allow Anderson to have an Easter Day concert in 1939 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. The concert is phenomenal of course, a tour de force considering how much Anderson went through.

I knew the story but heard a radio program on this earlier in the day, so I sought out the concert online and listened to it.

You should read about it sometime. :D It is quite sobering and inspring at the same time, given the historic event that is about to happen here in 10 days.
