  • Blues...

Anyone into the Blues? I went to a blues club a few months ago and really liked it. Im trying to find some old school blues, if anyone knows of any artist I could check out, please let me know.

I love the blues - an original American art form, along with jazz.

Old school? Do you like electric Chicago blues (think Buddy Guy) or acoustic delta blues (Muddy Waters, etc.)? I can give you lots of recommendations.

I am thinking more towards muddy waters. Have you seen the movie Black Snake Moan? I think the music from that movie was awsome.

Great stuff. I haven't seen the movie but I have heard the music.

Try John Lee Hooker, a prime exponent of Delta Blues. And Muddy Waters, although he is more well known for Chicago blues as well. Of course, the legendary Robert Johnson, although I think it is a bit hard to listen to his stuff because it is so raw.

Also, it is hard to go wrong with Buddy Guy and Albert King. Look for an album called Showdown with Guy, King and Robert Cray.... very good! In the Texas style of course are Johnny Winter and Steve Ray.

There are a lot of acoustic blues guitarists out there. Mary Flower from my town of Portland OR is good. Also, go to youtube and look up Ben Andrews and the Blue Riders. This is an acoustic blues band from DC - Ben plays the Piedmont style and it is exceptional. His covers of Robert Johnson songs are phenomenal. Look for his rendition of Traveling Riverside Blues and Gallows Pole. This the real deal, not the versions that Led Zeppelin stole and butchered.

Awsome, thanks alot I will check all of those out. Its kinda addicting especially listening to it live. So much feeling! That movie Black Snake Moan is a little crazy but the part when they are at this little backwoods bar and they are playing the blues, its like everyone just gets taken over by the music. Very cool!!! Thanks alot Scrumhalf.

Well, I never was either until I heard it live. I think actually seeing people play the music changes everything. I mean you see how much they are moved by it. I thought it was really cool. Maybe on our next date I will take you to a blues bar....;)
