  • Rhodesian Ridgeback

Im been thinking about getting a dog. The kids have been asking me everyday for the past few months. I told my daughter if she stays on the honor roll the rest of the year I will get her one. The thing is I know I will be doing alot with the dog as far as walking it and stuff, so I want to get a somewhat manly dog. I read a few good things about this breed and seams like a good dog. I was wondering if anyone here has one or knows anything about them.

My dad had one. He had problems with her because she would fight with the other female. There was another male so they would both compete. In the end he put her down because she became to much trouble. That would proberbly happen with most breeds tho.

Well Im looking for a smart dog. I want training the dog to go as smooth as possible. I seen a special on these dogs awhile ago and it said they were very smart, loyal dogs. And I like that it looks like a mans dog and at the same time it has a family dog look to it. And if you guys have any tips on housebreaking dogs I would really like to hear them.

Do you have any other suggestions? I like those blue pitbulls but my daughter is afraid of Pitbulls. I was thinking of a Rott but I dont want a dog that drools all over the place. I dont want a long haired dog. If you know of any other breeds I should check out let me know. I dont plan on getting the dog until I have researched as much as I can and looked at alot of options.

Well, I dont want to take a poodle out for a little jog. I think dogs kinda represent their owners personality. So I want a very handsome, muscular, smart dog.:D

I've only had Pitt Bulls and a German Shep - all of them amazing in their own way. GS's are SO smart, and so loyal - but very hairy. My second Pit came from a very good breeder, and he is also incredibly smart, loyal, and such a good family dog. ALL dogs shed - I don't care what you read. Some more than others obviously, but they all shed hair all over your house/clothes/furniture/car/etc

Standard poodles are actually very intelligent as well :D

Use a bell for housebreaking. I bought some cheap bells at the store and put them on the doorknob with a string. Every time I took him out I rang the bell with his snout and told him good job, he learned that if he had to use the bathroom that he needed to go ring the bell.

I have heard good things about ridgebacks but have never owned one... I have a male Rottie and he is fantastic! Training with him was great... very smart, very loyal and they don't drool all over the place bro... Thats actually the reason I didn't get a mastiff..... My rott only gets slobbery when he takes a drink cuz he sticks his face in the bowl so then I have to watch out or he will goob me... lol

I will go post a thread with a cpl pics of my rott for ya

How about a German Shorthaired Pointer? My neighbor had one - great dog, very friendly, energetic, wanted to play all the time.
