Ok, so I pick up the new dog today. We tried a dog a few years ago but the thing ruined my house so I got rid of it. We werent ready then to put in the effort and the kids were very young so it was like 3 babies in the house. So this time I researched the breed and really found a dog I want to be a part of. Now Im ready and willing to do what it takes to have a dog. So I think I have a good plan for the training but I have a quick question about house breaking. Should I focus on getting the puppy to use the bathroom by the backdoor and not so much worry about him going outside NOW then after he is used to going at the door work on him going outside? Or should try the outside part from the get-go?? I really like that idea of hanging a bell on the door and ringing it everytime I take him out, Im am going to try that. Thanks alot!!

get him to go outside from jump bro -- my boy spent his young pup life right close to me - when i saw him start to stir a bit i took him outside -- he learned very quickly -
the bell is a great idea -- my boy lets me know when he has to go
dogs are awesome

i dont think you are ready now either.Originally posted by FrankTheTank55 View PostOk, so I pick up the new dog today. We tried a dog a few years ago but the thing ruined my house so I got rid of it. We werent ready then
you convey an attitude about dogs that doesn't sit well with me. "the thing ruined my house." how about, "i ruined my house by not taking the time necessary to work with my dog".
no disrespect bro, you just dont sound like a dog person to me and to be honest, i don't like people that can just discard an animal because its not convenient.

Definitely anything your dog does or doesn't do well with is on you....
But to answer your question you should start with him going outside... Steer clear of the training pad crap and just put in the effort to house break him from the get go and you will be happier in the long run. I strongly suggest crate training and although some people don't agree with me, I really believe it is the best way and best for the dogs own safety as well.... If you aren't using a crate then look into it for sure bro.

Well I never really was a dog person. That puppy we had a few years ago my wife just brought home one day. And to by honest I wasnt into working 60 hours a week, helping with a new baby, helping my older kid with homework and taking care of a puppy. That dog could get out of any crate we would buy. I would come home and the blinds would be ripped out of the windows, piss everywhere. The thing is lucky I gave it away instead of throwing it out the car window at 90mph. Things are different now trust me I would not get another dog unless I am ready 150% to put the effort into it. I appricate your thoughts and I respect how much you love animals. This time Im looking at the dog as another child. I will make it my mission to prove you wrong...lolOriginally posted by THE BOUNCER View Posti dont think you are ready now either.

I also agree with crate training when they are puppys.Originally posted by CrankinSteiN View PostDefinitely anything your dog does or doesn't do well with is on you....

also go straight to the place you want your dog to poop. They will remember very quick and always go there, no matter whos house im at if my dog had to poop it will go on the side of the house.
A good thing to remeber is puppys go alot. key times no matter what when ever they sleep or napp the first thing they do after waking up is go. so make sure you take him to your spot first thing. Also a few mins after they eat they will go. this sometime takes a lil longer so be rerady to chill out side sometimes and keep your dog in the area you want it to go.

Never take your eyes off of him, watch every move he makes, the instant you see him 'start to stir' take him out to the area you prefer him to go now and in the future. Always verbally praise him when he does his business. Treats are great positive reinforcement. Dogs learn through "conditioned response" just like Pavlov proved. Crates are great I couldn't live w/o it. Let him walk into it before you put him in it. Throw some toys or treats in there to 'coax' him. It will become his safe haven or den down the road and give you an easy break if you ned it for company or whatever.
Don't get upset (easier said then done) when he does something that YOU don't agree with either. He is truly following your lead/guidance. It can be stressful but it is even more rewarding when you becomes YOUR BESTFRIEND!
Post on here if you ever need some advice I'll help if I can.

Good looking pup.
As they said before, just be watching him every second he is out of his crate. My husky was such a baby about the crate that I slept beside it on the floor for 2 nights to show him it was fine. Now he doesn't mind going in there at all.

Crate train your dog. You will need to spend 72 hours straight using the crate, they get use to it fast and they do not want to dirty their sleeping area. Take the dog outside where you want him to go and use a command word for him to go,picky what ever you want. I tell my dogs to go potty, kids picked the word and they know what they need to do. If he goes make a big deal out of it. If he does not go put him back in the crate and keep taking him out every so often until he goes. Once he goes then you can take him out of the crate and play with him. Don't play with him until he goes. You need to start with taking him out of crate every two hours the first day, double the hours the next day and so on. This means also getting up with him at night to take him out.
Do a search and you can find some good sites on how the increase the number of hours over 3 to 4 days.
