Maori tribes win millions in 150yo Govt payout

The New Zealand Government has agreed to pay hundreds of millions of dollars to eight indigenous Maori tribes to settle grievances dating back more than 150 years.

The tribes say they were victims of illegal land seizures and breaches of the Treaty of Waitangi.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key signed letters of agreement with eight tribes from the bottom half of the North Island and the top of the South Island.

The combined deals mean all historical claims in the South Island are in the process of being settled.

The tribes will receive almost $140 million in compensation and more than $100 million in forest rentals and emission credits.

In the agreement, the Crown has also acknowledged that one of the tribes authored the Haka, but the deal does not give it the right to veto its use or claim royalties.

This is similar to what happened here with the aboriginals. The goverment pays them benifits for stealing there land over 200 years ago. They use it to sit on their ass all day and get drunk.

Good for them! It obviously doesn't make up for history, but it's a small step in the right direction. Hopefully, they will invest it wisely and use it to address some of the social ills of their community.

Like you say Redback it could well be the turn of the Abo's next, I remember from my time in Darwin there were loads of them roaming around drunk, it was sad to see these once great nomadic people stripped and made to feel like pests in their own land.

Maori's, Abo's and Native Americans all shared the same fate it seems, Native Americans have at the very least been handed some poultry land back but with Aborinis(spel) they are nomadic by culture.

Sadly the payout will probably get squandered, Maoris form gangs instead of tribes now and roam the streets fighting and raping in the worst cases

Thats fucked, they got a payout 4-5 years ago. They also get royalties from sealord fisheries and they get total exclusion rights on prime beaches up and down the islands. Now dont get me wrong im a half cast and even the maori side of the family says it fucked. Mainly for the new divisions it creates within the people and also way does this generation have to pay for the fore fathers mistakes.

I think the Maori's have proberbly done better than the rest. Maori's on average are more educated and contribute alot more. There are many highly successful maori's in new zealand, CEO's, political parties etc.
