  • President Obama Jokes About Being a Bad Bowler: 'It's Like the Special Olympics'

    March 19, 2009 8:56 PM

The first appearance by a sitting president on "The Tonight Show" may well end up being the last.

President Obama, in his taping with Jay Leno Thursday afternoon, attempted to yuk it up with the funnyman, and ended up insulting the disabled.

Towards the end of his approximately 40-minute appearance, the president talked about how he's gotten better at bowling and has been practicing in the White House bowling alley.

He bowled a 129, the president said.

"That's very good, Mr. President," Leno said sarcastically.

It's "like the Special Olympics or something," the president said.

When asked about the remark, the White House said the president did not intend to offend.

"The president made an off-hand remark making fun of his own bowling that was in no way intended to disparage the Special Olympics," White House deputy press secretary Bill Burton said. "He thinks the Special Olympics is a wonderful program that gives an opportunity for people with disabilities from around the world."

Facing tough questions about the performance of his Treasury Secretary, $165 million in bonuses for AIG officials and anticipating a fight over his $3.55 trillion budget, the president has not had a particularly good week, and it's unlikely this will help matters.

What a rookie move. If there is a list of rules for political figures to follow, using "the special Olympics" in any way is at the top of the "No" list.

What the hell has he done?

Take us from billions of debt to trillions?

Release terrorists so they can kill again?

Insult foreign leaders by dropping appointments or giving them cheap gifts?

Refuse to speak in public without his teleprompter?

So far I am for the most part pleased with what I have seen. If you choose to only look at the negative then that is all you will see. If you remember correctly when Clinton left office there was no debt & a balanced budget. Now that Bush has completely destabilized the middle east we have more enemy's than ever. Our last president created this mess with his arrogant attitude & king of the world mentality. It will be 20 + years and several seating presidents later to undo the mess 1 incompetent president created. I like what I see so far but then anyone looks better than the last moron that held the office

 We were in trillions of debt thanks to all politicians, not just one. He released people who the United States was holding illegally according to international treaties, something we bitch about other countries doing all the time. Fuck foreign ministers of state! However, yes, he is an asshole who can't speak live without a teleprompter. I hate that people believe he is such an eloquent speaker. He doesn't think of the words, he's just really, really good at reading aloud (thats why he got elected & the millions he had in the bank, and the idiot Republicans ticket).

Using the bailout (Part II) money to rebuild our infrastructure is a good idea. It is not going to work how he intended it to, but the fact that South Africa has better roads than the United States is really disheartening.
