I am taking advantage of the drop in interest & have decided to mortgage my farm & invest 30 grand into a Solar Array. I have been looking into several different kinds of alternative fuel options and have decided that this is my best option considering the details of my land and the alignment of my home. I have decided to be on the grid for several reasons. The incentives for on grid installation are considerable. I am also a big believer in the vision that by connecting all the solar arrays, wind farms & nuclear power plants to the grid that perhaps someday we will not need any fossil fuel to generate electricity. I would love to see in my lifetime the only use for diesel fuel is for trucking and backup systems. I also feel that if you take the financing that factions in the middle east use against us that 1 day they will crumble. I refuse to continue to purchase commodities from a region that takes my hard earned money and allows it to be used against me. :fufool:

How much oil does the U.S. buy from the middle east? Their are some nice new tax credits from the feds that were put in under the last president for solar voltaic up tp 30% of the installation cost.Originally posted by Timber View PostI am taking advantage of the drop in interest & have decided to mortgage my farm & invest 30 grand into a Solar Array. Thats not the question. The question is, how much oil is in the world market and what happens to the price of oil when OPEC reduces output? Oil prices still go up. Indirectly, they have a great influence over the United States.Originally posted by 3v1lj03 View PostHow much oil does the U.S. buy from the middle east?

It's true but we buy most of our oil from Canada and Mexico at deep discounts. But, you miss my point maybe it was too fine a point anyway.Originally posted by NewbieChris View PostThats not the question. Lots of questions for you Timber:
1. How much do you spend in electricity per year now?
2. What is the estmated 'surplus energy' that you sell back to the grid going to net you every year?
3. What are the maintenance costs like on that set-up?
I'm really curious about this...I figured that eventually it'd get to the point where the return on investment would happen in a reasonable enough timeframe to get people to try this, but I didn't think the price of a solar setup was 'there' just yet.
