Alabama (no line) versus Southern Miss
Alabama has injury problems at quarterback, as starter Brodie Croyle is a game time decision with an injured shoulder and backup Spencer Pennington is out with his bad shoulder. Third string quarterback Brandon Avalos is expected to get the start in this game and I doubt that he’ll have much success throwing against a good Southern Miss pass defense that has yielded just 5.4 yards per pass play (to teams that combine to average 6.2 yppp on offense). The good news is that Alabama will focus on their good rushing attack (4.8 yards per rushing play against teams that allow 4.2 yprp) against a soft Eagles’ defensive front that has surrendered 4.7 yprp to teams that average 4.4 yprp on offense. Alabama should put a decent number of points on the board by moving the ball on the ground. Southern Miss doesn’t figure to do the same with their bad offense (4.1 yppl against teams that allow 4.8 yppl on defense) going up against a solid Crimson Tide defense that has permitted just 4.8 yppl to teams that combine to average 5.4 yppl on offense. Southern Miss is just 4-13-1 ATS in their last 18 road games and Alabama should still win this one by a score or two even with their 3rd string quarterback in the ballgame.
