  • There is no worse feeling than when...

...your favorite player (Alex Kovalev) on your favorite team (Montreal Canadiens) leaves via free agency because the asshole general manager tried to lowball him. :noo:

Oh, and get this, he decided to sign with a divisional rival (Ottawa Senators) just to stick it to our idiot GM. So that means we can expect a very pissed-off Kovalev to play at virtuoso level against us 6 times in each of the next two seasons.

No...he'd have been too expensive or too long in term. But they screwed up.

They needed a big center. Instead they traded for 5'10" Scott Gomez and his ridiculous contract.

They needed an offensively talented top-line Left Winger to replace Tanguay...they got Camallerri. This was the move I was happy about.

They needed to re-sign Kovalev for 2 years at 5mil per year. Instead they signed less-talented midget (5'7") Brian Gionta for 5 years at 5 mil per year.

The other free agent signings were nothing to write home about either. Spacek is a solid D-man, but I would rather have had Beauchemin...who was available. Hal Gill has size and is coming off a good season, and is now sporting a cup ring, but he has a tendency to get burned to the outside by wingers with speed.

Overall, I think Bob Gainey did a shit job. He had the ideal situation, with a ton of cap space and a few nice pieces of trade bait...and he somehow managed to screw it up.
