And people wonder why we are so fat as a nation... the development of the car-friendly and pedestrian-unfriendly suburb in the 1950s as the preferred residential area is an American disaster story, something that we are going to paying dearly for many years to come.

Most new developments cut out side walks. they take up to much space and cost more for the concrete. My neighborhood has side walks only on 1 side, I made sure I bought on that side. You will also notice neighborhood streets are getting more narrow. Its all about space and the more the builder can save the more houses he can build witch equales the more cash he makes.
The comunity next to mine is on a golf coarse. the have zero side walks narrow streets where 2 cars can squeeze by each other. no parking in front of your house. To top it off the houses are way to close to each other. LOL, they used to go for a mill now you can get one for 500K or less

strangly all the old neighborhoods do not have sidewalks, and all the new ones have a side walk on one side. Also my city, it is more like a giant suburb, says you must have at least one acre of land to build a house, that is nice it keeps the population down.
