Johann Hari: Republicans, religion and the triumph of unreason

How do they train themselves to be so impervious to reality?

Something strange has happened in America in the nine months since Barack Obama was elected. It has best been summarised by the comedian Bill Maher: "The Democrats have moved to the right, and the Republicans have moved to a mental hospital."

I dunno what's worse dealing w/that or the opposite liberal + no faith in shit - I've found that the latter is much easier to cope w/then the religious republicans you talk of tho - they just muscle their ideas so hard, just need to have their lips stitched shut.

It is amazing how politicians play with your emotions. Americans, seemingly inherently, want to help people and make sure they are okay. Most of us do not like to see suffering, but refuse to see it when it is right in front of us. Health care is a tricky issue. The more people you have in the system, as with any insurance, the better. However, at the same time, we are not adept to handle the quantities of people in areas where health care is faltering, so the less the better.

Bring in regulation, rationing, etc. and you scare off those who have insurance altogether. Adding in a healthy fear that, and this is true, if government employees run the program you are likely to have less involved employees. The government Motto is not, reward hard work, it is pay to live. Government employees have little ambition to do better than they have to. They have better benefits than many Americans and generally have a higher gross salary. It is also hard to get fired from a government job. Payment is reward in this country and greed is its counterpart. I'm going to catch a lot of flack for this, but if we ingrained in our society that it is better to give than to get; stating that pay doesn't have to be 13 million / year to be successful, that helping 13 million a year is success...you would see real change.

Until that 'communist', 'socialist', 'anti-American' (yet very much American belief) is actually instilled in future generations you will see people reaching for the highest dollar, rather than actually wanting to aide and help people in a society. We are brainwashed by the government and society whether you like to think you are or not. Simple as that.

Are you saying that we need to embrace communism or at least socialism? If not please talk down to me so I can understand what you are saying.

what you have to understand is, chris speaks from a safe zone. its like me saying what i would do in war from behind my computer. his parents have kept him sheltered away from the world. his judgmental views are based simply on what his old money parents have told him. their views passed down from their old money parents etc.. chris has never made a car payment or insurance payment but has owned many luxury cars, never paid rent but lives in large house in a rich PA suburb. he is about 24 now or so and has declared he is going to join the marines, move to germany, move to california, etc.. he is still living with dad to this day. :clapback:

chris, love ya honey but you know i speak the truth about real life while you talk jiberish about politics. :hibb:

well you obviously know more bout him than I do - I just am sick of hearing this dribble whenever anything political comes up. "Everything is so horribly wrong in america we need this and that" Never answers just criticism.

                          Exactly.

And no offense, NC- but most of us who share our views have real world experience of losing jobs, encountering a serious drain on finances, etc. Do you know that between my husband and I, we have lost 3 jobs in the past year- all due to the economy. We SURVIVED. We didn't let our house go into foreclosure, and we didn't go running to our parents. We had to pay out of pocket every month for our health insurance. I'm not going to get into the health care debate, because I don't know enough about it yet.

But people act like what Obama is doing for this country is only making it worse. I don't see how making healthcare affordable & available makes it worse. I don't see how stimulating the auto industry with CARS is making it worse. I don't see how the after effect of CARS takes place we will more fuel efficient cars which leads to less dependency on oil.

I don't think you can really offer your rose colored glasses approach from a bird's eye view on things like this. You have never really struggled to make ends meet. It sounds so condescending when you speak like that when you have no true experiences to relate it to.
