  • Pedigree dogs 'being bred to death'

Decades of inbreeding is causing immense suffering for pedigree dogs, who are plagued by painful and deadly genetic diseases as a result of breeding for appearance, a UK investigation has found.

The BBC documentary Pedigree Dogs Exposed, to be aired on ABC1 tonight, shows boxers suffering from epilepsy and spaniels with brains far too big for their skulls.

Other painful disabilities and deformities, including poor gait and severe heart and respiratory problems, plague purebreds like west highland terriers, golden retrievers and german shepherds.

Boxers have a super high rate of cancer and normally only live 6-7 years.

There is no doubt that this is happening, imo.

Mutts are usually the healthiest dogs. My boy is great, but he always has some damned issue. Between allergies, dry skin and intestinal issues he has cost me nearly 4k in 2 yrs time!

My neighbors mutt eats anything under the sun, tromps through the filthy canal by our house, rarely gets bathed and he never has issues, lol.

I agree. Our Rott ended up dying last Jan with horrible bone cancer in his mouth. I was watching something regarding this on the National Geographic channel like 6 months ago. It confirmed this article, and furthered their findings that these pure breds have blood disorders, crooked spines, etc. It basically said the genes have mutated from generation to generation causing these problems

We now have 2 mutts. I personally think mutts are easier to train, as well as healthier dogs.

          you are partly right.

boxer are more prone to tumors. just like other dogs are prone to other diseases.

little off on their normal age though. average boxer lifespan is longer then 6-7 years. more like 8-9.

and dont even say one more word about it. me and blm both have boxers and we will fuck your old ass up. mine will be 6 in January and he still as healthy as a pup. tons of energy.

It depends who you listen to; the vet, books, shows, but they say anywhere from 7-10 yrs for a boxer. Either way....it's way too short! I try not to think about it because when "the day" does come I will be a fucking absolute mess!!!

My buddies just passed, he was 11 and the last 3 yrs the dog was a mess. His health just started failing rapidly.

            Bah.....enough of that.
