NASA crashed a rocket into the moon on purpose

I'm watching the new right now (approx 7:30 est) and they showed nasa crashing a rocket into the moon to basically dig for research. It was showing a live shot, but I couldn't see anything happen.

Dang, I fell asleep and missed it. I have a 11 inch telescope and they said you could see it happen if you had a 10 inch telescope or larger. Perhaps the dust plume takes time to develop.
