      • Ok, I just got home from work, so I don't know if it's relavent to talk about the original post at this point, but I will just touch on a few things before going to bed.

The talk of "voids" isn't anything more than a willful ignorance. Removing religion doesn't mean you leave a void. When you stopped believing in santa clause, did you go looking to fill that void?

Values based of Christianity? Have you even looked at history before christianity or do just listen to the lazy guy at your church who realized he could scam hundreds of people and be thanked for it?

This thread has nothing to do with religion bashing. Your insecurities are not my fault. Maybe look to those who told you how to feel instead of learning for yourself. The subway ads are simply about raising consciousness that non-believers are every where and you will be ok if you choose to be one. No sudden lighting strikes related to the choice. I promise.

Who has read letters written by the founding fathers stating that at best they were deists leaning towards agnosticism and plenty of people living and fighiting for their country who go even further into being non-believers? When the country was first being founded "atheism" wasn't a thing that was shoved into the closet by theists.

Lastly, needed or believing that some theological faith is needed to be a good person is simply saying you only do it because you are afraid to get caught. Not because it's who you are. If theism has to be in place to keep order then you are admiting that without faith you would be a bad person. Guess what, I don't have or need faith and I garuntee you that I act more "christian" than at least 80% of those who claim to be christian. Empathy. Kind of hard not to have it and truly be a good person and not just pretending. Nothing is more in your face than real life.

        • Good read shib, I agree entirely, and I do have a lot of doubt about creation of the world, life after death ... etc. But I refuse to just believe out of faith to sleep better at night. forget that.

i don't know if you were referring to me or not but i actually feel like i need to clarify.

moral standards are set forth by people but the likelihood that they will follow them if they aren't written is slim to none. before religion, social contract kept things from getting out of hand, but as time progressed, so did the minds of people. people began finding faults with their social contract and thus began creating their own by reinterpreting what had already been written. i think religion, not to be argumentative, is a social contract that threatens people with consequences that are unfathomable. these immeasurable consequences scare people into behaving the way set forth by the contract, or in the case of religion, the doctrine. but here again lies another issue of interpretation. just as law, these words in "holy books" need to be interpreted. people will interpret them as they want, thus the break of one specific religion into sects (similar to the US Constitution and the political parties).

all in all, religion didn't set the moral rules we have, we set the moral rules into religion and forgot the etiology of it.

I wasn't specifying you if it doesn't apply to you. I don't mean that in any way to bring a subtle point. I mean it just like it reads.

I will agree/add to your point. Fundamentalist are the true believers. You can't only believe and follow parts of the bible. If you do that all you have done is create your own religion using christianity as an outline, but you are not christian. If you cast doubt or disagree with any part of the bible you can not claim that the parts you do believe to be infallible. It's either all inspired by God or it's not. A moderate chistian is simply a person who pretends to be christian.
