Inmates come to guard's aid in jail attack - CNN.com

(CNN) -- Hillsborough County, Florida, Deputy Kenneth Moon was alone at his station at a county jail facility near Tampa when an inmate attacked him with no warning.

Moon, 64, was no match for Douglas Burden, 24, in custody on various drug charges. With Moon still in his chair, Burden put him in a choke hold and pulled tight.

And then, surveillance video of the Monday attack showed, other inmates jumped into the fray.

But the other inmates joined the fight on the guard's side, pulling Burden away from Moon and punching him in the head. One inmate grabbed Moon's radio and called for back-up. The inmates held Burden down until other guards arrived as one of them extended a hand to help Moon up, according to the video.

Col. James Previtera, commander of Hillsborough County's Department of Detention Services, told reporters he believed that the inmates "saved the deputy's life."

"The response of the inmates in this case, I think, speaks volumes as to the fact that we treat these men and women ... in our facilities with a lot of respect," Previtera said.

Previtera said that Burden was moved to administrative confinement after the attack and that Moon was not seriously hurt.

    True.

Some just get caught up, some make bad choices and others just seem to be natural born losers.

Not sure how they run their pods but in most county jails the bulk of the inmates are low level repeat offenders doing short runs, they don't want to get caught up in a serious charge like battery on a LEO or attempted murder.

That would probably happen at alot of county jails! as Deca said it is low level risk guys with short time. That and I would be willing to bet the old timmer was not a dick like some of the young asshole correctional officers. Not all COs are created equaly just as not all inmates.

I worked in a max prison for eight years. It was not uncommon for maximum security prisoners to intervene on behalf of staff who were attacked by other prisoners. Or to help staff break up fights between prisoners.

The majority of prisoners where I worked were doing life without parole about half conformed to being institutionalized, the other half spent 99% of there life's in administrative segregation referred to as the hole.

i had a teacher in high school that would tell us stories of when he worked in a women's jail. he said if they ever got their hands on an officer they always went for the eyes.

but in this case, i'm sure by the time that these criminals get to jail, they're so mellowed out that it's either get into more trouble or just save one person's life.

after working there for 5 years he became a parole officer. only after doing that for another 5ish years did he settle down and become an environmental science teacher. he even had a huge telescope put in his front yard so he could do research on the solar system. pretty intelligent guy.

he told us this one story about how there was this girl in the prison who was a convicted murderer who was diagnosed with schizotypal personality disorder who was convinced that God was out to get her. some girls in the cell across from her slide her a bible from across the hall and she freaked out and started crying.
