where is the best place to get one? can deals be found? should I wait right before X mas and hope for a sale, lol.
all that being said then new Imac does look pretty dope. have no clue if they work good or not.

no sales at apple. best place to get it is from the apple store. you could probably get a discount if you went in with someone who has a student ID. ti's free shipping online right now and you get a 1-year warranty with all apple products and in-store genius bar support even outside of warranty.

you could also get her a mac mini with a nice LED display and it would cost a few hundred less.

Finding a brand new mac for under a grand is impossible. Those things are very expensive.

You could get your mom a decent laptop for half the price, or even a decent desktop.

Apple is your best bet, buy it, and have it shipped out. Best Buy also has them, but i would prefer the Apple store

I was checking out thoes minis but after you buy all the shit tat goes with it, keyboard, mouse and screen. it is almost the same price.
I think it would be worth the extra hundred or so to have it all in one package like the I mac.

do you know how much the student discount is?

Do you need a laptop? If not, how much power do you need? If you mom is retired and she isn't a power user, can she do with a Mac Mini? You can get one for under $500. We have one and it is pretty reasonable. Plus it is really neat looking, just a little box about 6 inches on the side. My wife is a software engineer and she got it for writing iPhone apps and it works fine.

              <EDIT>

Damn... looks like dbj beat me to it... LOL...

No lap top needed. she need the least power they have, lol. her mac now is the very first one they came out with, lol and she is ok with it. I personaly hate it even on high speed cable it takes to long to surf the web.
I was checking the mini as said above but it will come close to the same price and not as cool. I gotta let mom be cool.

depends on your school affiliation. i got $150 off my macbook pro. usually the discount depends on the amount you drop. you also get money off software too.

Macbook starts at 1k I thought. Education discount gets them for that I believe.

I can save about 300 bucks this way. Not as cool as the I mac but shit its for my mom not me,lol.
thanks for the tip I am gonna run it this way.

$765 for the mid-range mini (Amazon.com: Apple Mac mini MC239LL/A Desktop: Electronics) + $229 monitor from amazon (Amazon.com:]Amazon.com: ASUS VW246H 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black: Electronics ASUS VW246H 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black: Electronics) + $50-70 for keyboard (apple keyboard wired/wireless respectively) + $50-70 for a mouse = $1,135 (+/- $50 for shipping). still a lot less than what you would spend on an iMac. you might have to drop a few bucks for peripherals (cables to hook up the monitor, a USB hub if necessary) but still cheap.

if you can find a different monitor that qualifies for free shipping you'd save a few more bucks. the only discounts you'll find from apple are through amazon.

you better buy me one with the money you'd be saving! :P

For monitors, try Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more! Most of the stuff is free shipping and great prices

I would just find a Macbook on eBay that is not the latest generation and get it for cheaper.

If I was looking for a laptop for my mom, and all she does is basically internet and email, and she wanted a Mac, I would look for an older 15" Powerbook, those are built to last.
