A 17-year-old high school student was struck by a cement truck as he crossed the road walking to his school bus stop shortly before 7:30 a.m., police said today.
Philbrook was transported by Lyons Ambulance and then taken by a MedFlight helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital, Bettencourt said.
Philbrook is in the intensive care unit as MGH where he will undergo surgery to repair the fracture either tonight or tomorrow, O’Connell said.
O'Connell said Philbrok also suffered a contusion and a gash on his head which required stitches, O’Connell said.
Philbrook is in good spirits, said O’Connell, who spoke to the boy's father just after noon today.
“The father said that he [the boy] told him that the truck did slow down before it hit him,” O’Connell said.
Police did not release the name of the driver. The truck arrived at the station with an accident reconstruction team from the State Police. The truck did not appear to be damaged, police said.
Solar glare is believed to be a factor in the accident while speed apparently did not play a role in the crash, Bettencourt said.
The teen is believed to have been walking alone in the crosswalk when he was struck by the truck, Bettencourt said. Several students waiting at the bus stop rushed to the aid of the injured student, Bettencourt said.

Lady in my town got ran over by a tri-axle backing up; don't know why she didn't hear the back up beeper but it was a mess.Originally posted by radoDamn...Sad :( Life is so fucking precious.
I always let bigger vehicles have the right of way and give them room; after you drive stuff like this you have much more respect lot of blind spots and very hard to stop quickly.

Thats horrible man. Really horrible. I hope he pulls through.
An incident just happened in my neighborhood today actually. Around 2pm today i came home to see all the kids gathered around another kid. I brushed it off because i thought the neighborhood kids were playing or something. Turns out they were playing football in the snow, in the middle of the street. The snow wasn't sticking, but making everything wet and slippery. So this one kid jump in the air for the ball, grabs it and than lands on the concrete, smacking the back of his head into the ground.
He blacked out and everything. After putting the groceries from my car away, i went outside because all these people had gathered.
The kid was in and out of consciousness, and motionless. Ambulance was just called and they came about 4min later. It was a severe concussion and they took him to Johns Hopkins Hospital. I hope he gets better. This kid plays football, and this is not his first concussion, he is on two other medications for his previous concussions.
What a shitty weekend for him and their family. With all this snow coming, i hope everything is ok.Last edited by dna9488; 02-05-10, 05:55 PM.
