What do you guys feed your dog's? I did some research and started my pup on the Blue Buffalo brand but man did that ever give him gas. I then switched to Nutro Natural Choice brand. He still has some gas (I think all boxers do) but it is a lot better.

I know how most of us are very particular as to what we put in our bodies and I was wondering if you feel the same about your dog. All the reviews I read on his food were excellent . The brands of food my vet recommended turned out to be garbage. While I was researching I read an article where vets do not study animal nutrition in school. They looked at me funny when I told them I would never feed my dog Purina. :)

I had a lot of issues with my boxer and food and skin allergies. This is one of the few that didn't give him issues. It's crazy expensive but I get good deal fro the natural pet store becasuase I maintain there network.

Timberwolf Organics Wilderness Elk Dry Canid Formula

This is a decent site to give you an idea of quality of ingredients.

Kirkland Super Premium Chicken, Rice & Vegetable Formula. I get it from costco. $22 for 40lbs

The main thing to look at is the Ingredients. Purina and all that crap use corn products and fillers. The first few ingredients make up the bulk of the food. If you see "corn" in any of the ingredients list.. run away.

Ingredients in Kirkland Super Premium Chicken, Rice & Vegetable Formula.

Chicken, chicken meal, whole grain brown rice, cracked pearled barley, oatmeal, beet pulp, eggs, flaxseed, peas, apples, potassium chloride, choline chloride, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid, glucosamine, chondroitin.

Corn and beet pulp. Beet pulp filler is supposed to cause a lot of issues with dogs. Don't remember why.

corn is the much bigger issue.

you have to go up into the super high quality dog foods to find the dog foods without the beet pulp. and when you consider i have 2 monsters that go through a 40lb bag in 3 weeks you sort of have to find a healthy medium. the costco premium is by far the best quality food out there that is still affordable for 2 hogs! :D

40lbs for $22 for the kirkland

how much for the Timber wolf Organics? whats the weight of the bag?

                From the dogfoodproject.com website...

"Beet Pulp, the isolated fibrous material from sugar beets, is an ingredient that has an undeservedly bad reputation. It is a very gentle, beneficial source of fiber that is not only generally very well tolerated, but also has specific properties that make it suitable as a source of nutrition for the beneficial bacteria that reside in the intestinal tract. The sugar is almost completely removed, what is left in the pulp is only about 1/5 the amount of sugar that you would find in a serving of carrots of equal size. It is also colorless and does not turn a dog's coat turn red, like urban legends claim. The argument that beet pulp is an "unnatural" ingredient is often brought up, but people who present this complaint seem to forget that it is also not natural for dogs to eat highly processed commercial products with a carb content of generally 40% and more, and a moisture content of only around 10% as opposed to a more natural 60-70%. Added fiber is required to make such formulations work for the pets who eat a dry diet."

                  Absolutely.

Typically, it would be around $2 per lb. However, because I do work for her she gives me a 33lb bag for $30. If I had to pay full price I would certainly find an alternative.

"Beet pulp is controversial filler. It is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required."

yea so you have some saying its not so great and others saying its fine. its one of those things you have to be aware of but not worry to much about.

corn products in dog food however is simply not a good thing in everybodys book. lol

chadd check out the kirkland brand i use. if you look at the url that blm uses, the kirkland is rated higher then the nutro natural choice. the catcher is that the kirkland is cheaper. you get a 40lb bag for $22 as opposed to a 35lb bag for $32.

Hmmm. Interesting. Funny thing is I really researched pretty hard to find the Blue Buffalo food. But since it gave him a ton of gas I went back to the dog food store and asked for their recommendation. They said that Natural Choice was just as good and that they had a money back on that brand. Does your dogs have a lot of gas with Kirkland? Only problem is the closest Costco is about 20 miles away.

no, my dogs never really had gas issues.
