and it's not learned helplessness in the individual sense but in the societal sense. when society tries repeatedly to change and they fail there is no longer a drive until that society renews itself with a new population.

you speak from a point of view of luxury. you live in a castle compared to what those kids have. you have the gift of education, you have food in your stomach. my point again is that its easy to speak about what these people are doing wrong as a society when you have never been through it..Originally posted by dbjmofo View Post*their

of course i'm going to see it from a different point of view because i have a history which affects me all the time. the point i'm trying to get across is that in most african countries (and this point of view isn't my own but someone who lived and worked under an oppressive power, specifically in Burkina Faso) is that no matter how much the people of a country try to get out from the cycle of oppression and poverty that the power will always win because of the amount of control it has. when you entire life is dependent on whether or not you give in to the rule of a horrible ruler then you're going to do what is best for your family, whether it be barely getting by or not getting by at all.Originally posted by THE BOUNCER View Postyou speak from a point of view of luxury. you live in a castle compared to what those kids have. you have the gift of education, you have food in your stomach. my point again is that its easy to speak about what these people are doing wrong as a society when you have never been through it..
my "source" is a man who worked as a guard in the army in Burkina Faso and had to escape the country to move here. he had to "divorce" his wife because she was too afraid of the consequences of leaving and getting caught.
the reason why i cite "learned helplessness" is because when, no matter what you do a power stronger than you will punish you, you learn to be helpless and give in.
i know what you're saying is that we can sit in our A/C'd homes and talk about world politics all the time, but the point i am trying to make is that we are trying to understand the situation.

Why Foreign Aid Is Hurting Africa - WSJ.com
"Over the past 60 years at least $1 trillion of development-related aid has been transferred from rich countries to Africa. Yet real per-capita income today is lower than it was in the 1970s, and more than 50% of the population -- over 350 million people -- live on less than a dollar a day, a figure that has nearly doubled in two decades."

Blame me.
I either don't have the will, the desire or the intelligence to make my goals reality.
If you provide me with all the tools to make it happen and I still can't get it done I have no one to blame but myself.
Society didn't fail me, God didn't fail me, I failed me.

your parents failed you. just like the generations and generations of parents that fail their children over there.Originally posted by decadecadeca View PostBlame me.

your parents failed to give you the genetics, their parents failed to give them anything at all.

Blaming genetics is bullshit 99% of the time. People look to excuses outside themselves for why they fail.
Think of it this way....
Someone builds you a brand new gym, fitted with all necessary equipment, they give you money so you can afford to train, they supply you with supplements and gear, and they send a doctor and a trainer around once a month to check on your health and educate you on proper form and nutrition.
Ten years later you're still small and weak. And what's even worse is now you're raising your kids to be lazy and weak too.
Who do you blame?
