The fifth of may is not Mexican independence day. It commemorates may 5th 1862 when 4000 Mexicans defeated an invading french army of 8000 in a small town. This was the first defeat the french had encountered in fifty years. This war was also the last time any nation was invaded in the Americas by an army from another continent.
