  • not for profit 501(c)(3) question

You money people out there (Chris I expect you most likely know tha answer), I am in the process of developing a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization. In my research, I have found that it is going to cost me $1000 plus some in order to get this up and running. This is more than expected, but doable. My question is this, do you think it would be wrong of me to "loan" the money to the organization at no interest and be paid back when the donations come in (legal, but ethical is my question). Or would I be better eating the cost and writing it off as an expense/donation?

sometimes you can get a government grant if it's something that isn't a "popular" non-profit. but i don't think it's wrong. just make sure you don't take the donations straight off the bat.

I have looked into grants, but all the ones that I can find are eligible to 501-c-3 organizations. So they original outlay from what I can tell must come from me

We will be running programs and events, (such as back to school book bags, holiday gifts, etc) for children who have been removed from their homes and are under the care of foster families. It will be a sister organization to CASA, which will allow the organization to hopefully pull in donations quickly. I have an attorney who is willing to work pro bono and im in the process of recruting an accoutant. Offering the lawyer a board position got it done for him, so I figure the same will be done with the accountant.
