  • non lifter gym receptionists rant

So I go i for a quick arm workout at my local fitness centre, got my shorts on, vest, ipod, arm strap, belt, drink. Walk past reception as normal and wave like I do every time, they never stop anyone and mostly know me. Soo as I make eye contact she's like 'yes can i help you', I'm like 'no thanks',then she's 'whats your name' I tell her and say type it in and you'll see my photo. She says in a harsh way, you need bring your ID, show it at reception and get a reciept every time'. So i say 'no I'm sorry thats not convenient, and besides, no one ever gets asked, never' so then she escalates it and says 'would you like to speak to the manager' so I say 'no, I don't need to and walked off.

show ID and get a reciept every time along with carrying belt, wrist wraps, drink, ipod w arm pouch, I mean its ridiculous!

I would have stopped someone walking into the gym wearing a vest. Hell, I hope someone would stop them from walking out of the house wearing a vest

Seriously though, if it's a new person they are just trying to do their job the way they are trained. It could have also been something where the higher ups wanted to crack down on people behind in dues or something. Usually if there is something weird, as long as I get to work out I just go along with things that time. If it becomes a habit then either the rules changed or I would look into what changed.

I agree. She also has the responsibility to explain why something different is happening.

My gym started asking people to show both the gym membership card (barcode readable) and an ID like a driver's license. Apparently, a lot of people were using other people's membership cards to score free workouts and the management had no choice but to ask people to show ID every time. Inconvenient but understandable.....

my gym has people sneak in before like 11am and try to lift for free cuz its just basically a lil under ground gym - just dont get caught by the owner man... he is a fucking big dude and doesnt take kindly too it. Best gym i've had by far - and I still haven't technically paid a dime yet for a membership ;)

i'm the kind of person that picks and chooses to ID people at work too. the reason is that the people you don't ID are people who you recognize and the people you do look either shady, you haven't met them to put that on your "don't ID list" or are hot and you're trying to strike up conversation. but the difference is that i do it in a tone that doesn't come off as harsh. offering to bring over a manager is something that i've learned only to do in situations where the person is getting hostile for no reason.

so you may have taken it the wrong way which is understandable but don't get too worked up about it.

It doesn't bother me. At my other gym it takes 3 seconds. Walk up with ID in hand, say HI and scan. Light turns green and you walk in. At the Colosseum you just walk in and sign your name.
