So I'm currently self employed and have a 12 month job contract which comes to an end september but they've extended it another 6 months. But I'm effectively working the contract for the government and I know they're gonna be cutting back and there is a department review happening which could lose me my contract. The place I work is 25 minutes drive from home. So with the potential uncertainty going forwards I have had a look around at perminent jobs. Well I found one and today they offered me the job. Only its a good hour and a half away in the car and other days they want me working in london so nearly 2 hour door to door. So I like it where I am and its convenient but there is uncertainty about the future and nobody can give me any guarantees there at this time. I got made redundant late 2008 and I don't really want to risk that again but I do like it where I am. I said id let the guy who offered me know monday

If they comp your commute then go for it. Always stick with something that offers a sense of stability because you can plan around that. If you were to continue working where you are now them you might have this feeling of anxiety because you won't know what to expect the next week.

this i dont agree with ... live with not knowing if your going to have a job in 6 months or travel a little further for more stability job wise ......Originally posted by Timma View PostDon't look to the future live in the now or some bullshit they say. Honestly it sounds the cons outweigh the pros of this new job from what you've said. I say stick with the current job and see if something else comes along.
upload some good music and make the drive bro

So I get the contract through and tell my boss, he shits himself and says your safe here until march no doubt, then he says that in march if someone puts a gun to his head and says he has to lay some people off I and one other of the 9 people would be the last he'd fire. He's a genuine sort and TBH the new job contract had a clause in it that they could fire you with one weeks notice for the first 6 months and then it reverts to three months notice required. That and the minimum hour and half commute to and from work swayed me into staying where I am for now even though the other job pays £15k more per year. I'm good at my job but want a work life balance and I'm not moving for something that offers a weeks notice for the sake of some more money and losing all that time. When I told them I wasn't progressing matters further they wanted to talk about the notice period, and this is after they raised the basic wage 12 grand for me also. They must be pissed but my mind was made up. In the end id spent so much time thinking about it I came to the conclusion that it can't be right since when I moved before I've always been gun ho about it

Nice to hear it all sounds like it worked out for you. To be safe, I'd just make sure you have a loose back up plan for March. My husbands old company, they told him he'd be the last one to go, they will do everything they can to keep him on, etc...but in the end, they let him go all the same.
