  • Now even kids will hate Obama....

This guy is a dick and an idiot. Public school needs a lot of changes. Simply making it longer is not going to help. Broaden the cirriculum a bit and stop cramming the same standard crap down their throats just so they can all pass the same standardized test. And would it kill them to start teaching a personal finance class sometime in high school? (Learning a bit about money might have helped us avoid the shitty economic situation we are in) Kids shouldn't learn what a credit score is from a singing pirate on a commercial.

Not to mention longer school days and shorter summers is going to make America's obesity problem much, much worse....

Longer School Year May be Costly - WDAF

Reported by: Sharita Hutton FOX 4 Web Producer
    September 28, 2010

KANSAS CITY, MO. - In the near future your children may be faced with longer school days and shorter summers. That is the message President Barack Obama is sending, stating that school districts need to make a change.

The president is pointing to the fact that students in the United States attend classes about a month less than children in most other advanced countries. In the past, children had longer summer vacations because they had to work on the family farm. That is not the case now and the president says that is why the U.S. needs to make the change so kids can catch up with their peers in other parts of the world.

The president is not talking specifics just yet, as far as how much longer the school year would last. But there are a lot of people concerned about what this will do for school districts who are already cash strapped.

Currently many U.S. Schools are in session for about 197 days. If you add extra days that means adding the cost of teachers, of running the buildings and cost for transportation.

FOX 4 spoke to two districts closer to home to see what they think about this whole idea. The Kansas City Kansas School district said they're not crunching the numbers just yet. They said the total will be outrageous and said it's hard enough keeping schools funded during a normal year and that adding additional days will be close to impossible.

The Lawrence School District is estimating the additional days could run them about $6 to 7 million more. Districts feel that may be a low estimate and it would likely cost more.

Imagine if America spent half as much on schools and education as we do on war and military...

i know that for the longest time the county where i live would go back and forth on extending school days M-Th and giving friday off because they would save a lot of money (building's electricity, gas for buses). problem with that was that parents would have to shell out for babysitting while they were at work.

but in terms of lengthening the entire year, that seems absurd. i mean, a few days here and there won't affect much but what about snow days and making those up? i know after the blizzard we had this year some schools were in session for 2 weeks past the day they would have gotten out, some even shortened spring break. so what would happen if we had another blizzard and time was taken out of the already shortened summer?

The other thing is too with schools is the way teachers are performing. I for one am not looking forward to when my son is in school. I hear from all sorts of parents all the time how their kids come home with hours upon hours of homework and have to help them with it because the teacher hasn't taught the topic very well, or not at all. There's plenty of other things that need to be done besides throwing money into the schools, but money is needed for all this to happen. If he wants to lengthen it then give more money to the schools for fucks sake.

I'm all for challenging kids so they can learn more and all, but do it right. The kids are the ones learning and doing homework, not us.

But on the flip side too, todays kids are just way too damn lazy and most parents let them get away with it. I remember when I was in school I worked my ass off. Yes learning came easy to me, but I made it my priority to do well. On the same note I also did alot of my learning outside of school as well. Today there isn't enough of that and it's all relied on what goes on in the classrooms or with homework.

Just take most of the money we spend on fucking lazy ass idiots that abuse the system, then take the billions we spend on this "war" on drugs, and I guaranfuckingTEE that the school systems will be much better off.

Yep. Half of the teachers are the problem also. They hate their life, go home each night and pop valium after valium and drink wine glass after wine glass, then get up each morning and go teach a subject they hate, at a school they hate, to kids they fucking hate.

Raise teachers pay and standards, cut out the fat, stop paying the football coach 8 times as much as the math teacher and let's get some fucking priorities straight.

You must know some professors/teachers because I know a couple very well and you just nailed them to a tee.

Sounds like all of the teachers I know. They are all also mostly overweight and gossip queens. What a joke.

I know some as well and that's all they do.

Plus those female teachers are sex fiends. I dated two different ones and know a couple more who love having crazy sex. Must be something about teaching that makes them so crazy.

My sis in law is a teacher: she's at a private school though and before when she compares it to public schools it's horrible.

Public schools can be just fine , and you can make yourself from them no doubt - it's a matter of your own work / the location of the school.

Kids I know that I've done community work with have class books have school books referring to the south and slavery with such blatant hate it's disturbing. I love to joke about race , and face it the south is always my ball sack, but these kids have no choice but just read and absorb.
