  • So work asks me today...

If I want to do some field work beginning of next month 2 hours away from home for about 2 weeks. I asked the typical questions like what is it for, for how long, part time or full time, how many hours a day, etc.

Well as you guys know my wife is pregnant and around that time she will be 8.5 months. They stated that it would be 12 hour days and i'd have to stay down there during the week because the contractors will be working days, nights, and weekends possibly. Also I would have to pay for hotels and food out of pocket then get reimbursed which I have no money for or no credit cards. On top of that I have no experience with what they are working on and don't know what to look for.

Well last year I worked out of the office for them twice, one being a night shift after working some hours in the office. After doing this I got screwed for a raise this year and no recognition for going above and beyond what I normally do after given a choice for the night shift to do it or not.

So pretty much I said there is no way I can do it. I don't want to be 2+ hours from home when my wife could have a problem or go into labor. Plus on top I don't have the money to front to stay down there. Also they have people in the office that can do this, but from what I know they didn't budget enough money in the proposal to have someone higher than me that knows what to do go down there so they could get the job and make a profit.

Now my wife is worried i'll get fired, but I told her if they do i'll just contact a lawyer.

file a claim with the EEOC if that happens. i know a few investigators and cases like that always work out to your benefit.

It all depends on the state you live in.

"At will" states offer no protection at all unless you're in a contract agreement. In those states you can be fired with or without cause for any legal reason.

Is it worse to have a miserable life and be so far away from your family... or ... get fired?

Not saying you would get fired, just have to look at it like that.
