  • Just a little wireless router tip for anyone having issues.

Change the channel you are on!!

Most routers come from the factory set on channel 6. If there are a ton of people with wireless routers around you there can be all kinds of interference because everyone is on the same channel frequency.

I was having to unplug and plug back in my wireless router like 4 times a day because of constant disconnects etc..

I went in to the linksys admin panel online and changed my channel from 6 to 11 and now it works perfect.

yea, when i click on the little wireless icon on the computer i can see 37 different networks. every once of them is probably on factory default channel 6.

I'm surprised more people don't know this.

Not only are your adjacent wireless networks typically on the same channel but so are a lot of 2.4ghz phones even some baby monitors and home alarm systems.

You might actually look into a new router just for the speed. What connection are you getting? If you have a 54g router, you might be able to do better especially if you have a 108 card in your laptop.

use channels 1 or 11 even better use "n" instead of "g"
802.11N router you dont have that problem cuz its 5Ghz band
g is considered the garbage band

I just checked mine and it was already on channel 11. I haven't done anything to it. I just hooked it up and went with it. It's the Cisco Valet Plus and this wireless adapter Linksys AE1000 - Wireless Connector - Cisco Home Products Store

I always have a low strength, but it doesn't seem to run anything slow. Any tips? The router is on the other side of the house (the default line when we moved in). I need to get the cable people out to connect it to a different cable line in my house.

shib, try elevating the router up like 6-7 feet off the ground. on top of a shelf etc..

i have the standard shitty router from verizon. it needs to get replaced every couple months but verizon takes care of it.

i knew about the cordless phones/baby monitors running on the same frequency but we haven't really had any problems. from time to time the signal drops a bar or two but it picks up like 10 minutes later. i will definitely tweak around the channel settings to see if it does anything drastic. thanks for the tip!

No, I meant the wireless connection from your laptop to your router, not your internet connection speed.

shib, the client often lies about its connection speed says "low" but the throughput is normal so if it isnt slow then dont worry about
if it really is slow or your having problems update the wireless driver. this is really important the wireless driver has to be updated all the time this fixes 99% of the wireless issues.
