This is where it's been. To the right of the TV. I think it just be the location of it compared to my desktop. I wasn't sure if there was something I could tweak until I got the router moved.

Most routers come from the factory set on channel 6. If there are a ton of people with wireless routers around you there can be all kinds of interference because everyone is on the same channel frequency.

I was having to unplug and plug back in my wireless router like 4 times a day because of constant disconnects etc..

I went in to the linksys admin panel online and changed my channel from 6 to 11 and now it works perfect.

Yeah, it usually helps to switch it up. If I start having problems that is the first thing I do.

yeah but you can only use 1,6 or 11 in a 2.4GHz band. It only has 3 non-overlapping channels. in an urban environment with lots of neighbors your fucked either way. this may not be an option if your clients like PS3 can only do 802.11g. G is shit unless your forced to you use it.

if you go with 5GHz N you have many more channels to pick from 22 i think. so if you leave it on the default settings out of the box (auto detect) your good. plus 802.11N data rate is much fast 100MB or 300MB (dual-band) vs G which is 54MB.

i had to become an expert at this shit overnight cuz of a construction job installing and configuring 900 access points for a corp. building.

HMMMMMM...so my method of randomly picking a channel may not even be changing anything. Thanks for the info.

if it really is slow or your having problems update the wireless driver. this is really important the wireless driver has to be updated all the time this fixes 99% of the wireless issues.
Update like when you do windows update but for the driver?

bro your pushing this N shit like its going out of style. for those of us who have an old router and are having problems the first thing to do is change the channel. i live in an urban area and guess what, it worked and i didnt have to buy a new router. so stfu. :)

True, N did not become a true standard until last year. Even though products have been out for a few yrs. Going to N would eliminate most problems, provide more consistent speeds and over all reliability but they are more expensive and not needed if you don't have the hardware and speeds to justify it.

yea i know its better, but its so simple to first try the channel thing and save some money.

i went from 4-5 disconnects a day to 0 just by changing from 6 to 11.

Agreed. His points on over lapping channels is spot on. His opinion on g being garbage is just that, an opinion.

I was involved in building numerous high profile wireless networks throughout Floridas major metro areas all with g equipment and they all served their purpose well. Even one for dick face 'W' during a press blitz in Tampa.

Windows update doesnt always work. download the driver here for your OS (XP Vista 7) with the link below. then go back to where your were in device manager and go to update driver browse to the files you extracted or it may have a setup.exe and just install it for you.
                          Linksys AE1000

the clients (your PC) looks for the least busy AP. theres a setting on the properites of most NIC cards "Roaming Aggressiveness" if you turn down the setting down your pc wont constantly try to associate w/ other AP's.

believe me i know i had to make multimillion dollar decisions and explain to the customer why draft N 2.0 was the way to go.

you lose 1/2 of the throughput do to the overhead of wireless (WPA, WEP, etc) so 54MB is really 25MB. so speed should matter even on a home LAN.

besides the throughput N uses "MIMO" technology (multiple in multiple out) which crushes normal wireless. i had a couple sites who went completely wifi. i take it you know a lot about this shit too?

bro if it works dont fix it. i thought I was helping and informing you. dont get rid of it just for the hell of it LOL. Its actually hard to cause interfernce issue. I done wifi site survey in high rises and seen hundreds of AP's on each channel 1,6, & 11. I may work forever but probably wont. one day you may get tired of fucking with it and I was giving you another option.

Downloaded it, and selected it for the update and got the same response. There were actually two choices and I did both. Winxp and Winxp_64. I guess it was set up fine out of the box.
