So I just saw that this didn't pass. I'm across the country, but I'm still a little bummed out. I'm sure if we saw the positive effects that might have ensued, other states would have taken notice.
I was actually very surprised it didn't pass. Every comment on every article was in favor of it. Every interview I saw on TV was in favor of it. I guess it was the older population that silently came in and voted against it.
I can't really understand the argument against it. Honestly, even if it was legal, I personally wouldn't smoke it that much, if ever. But all of the anti-marijuana propoganda really doesn't hold up IMO.
Coming to work high? (Alcohol is legal. See how long you keep your job if you show up to work drunk.)
Driving high? (Not the same at all as driving drunk. Driving high on marijuana is safer than driving drunk, tired, while texting, while on the phone, while playing with the radio, etc. Plus just as it is illegal to drive after drinking, I'm sure driving after smoking weed would be illegal too)
Increase in teen use? (100% Bullshit. Teens use it now because it is easier to get from your local drug dealer than it would be from a convenient store if you had to be 18.)
Gateway drug? (Personally I think this is a myth. I know tons of people that smoke weed that never moved on to anything else. I also have met a few people who have tried cocaine, heroin, meth, etc. that never smoked weed. But even if the gateway drug thing holds water, its because Marijuana is classified in the same category as cocaine, heroin, etc. If it was legal, it would SEEM like a much bigger jump to go from Marijuana to Cocaine than it is at the moment. Plus you would be getting marijuana from a drug store instead of the same drug dealer that sells everything else.)
This is just my thought for the day. I really can't see any good reason why this prohibition should continue. But then again, we are in America. The same country where a 20 year old can serve in the Military but not have a beer. The same country that can show suicides on youtube but not a female nipple. And it seems like the same country that will continue to miss out on billions in potential tax dollars and spend billions more locking people up for smoking joints and watching Comedy Central in peace.
