winter tires are meant for cold temperatures and for the tire to be able to get traction on slick roads. If the temperature changes is, and its warm, those tires are worthless.Originally posted by Shibby View PostIf I get winter tires, they will be fine to drive on regardless of the weather until it warms up again right? What's makes a winter tire a winter tire?
The reason i recommended winter tires was because you sounded really concerned and i am assuming this winter is going to suck.
You could get an all season tire that is highly rated for all conditions if you wanted.

It sounds like really good all season 185 aren't really going to do much different for the snow and ice days. I assume that since I'm buying new tires they will change them and put the current ones in the trunk for me. How much is it usually to switch the tires out in the spring? Are there any brands I should stick to or avoid? Firestone, Goodyear, Dunlop...

About 99% of tires don't work in the ice. If you're willing to go down the winter tire route, just switch them out in the spring. You can keep her current tires and than remount them in the spring. Just tell the guys at the place not to dispose of your tires because you will reuse them in the spring.Originally posted by Shibby View PostIt sounds like really good all season 185 aren't really going to do much different for the snow and ice days. When it comes to winter tires, i really can't say which one is better because I have never used a winter tire. Best thing is to get on tire websites and start reading the reviews.

The best winter tires for standard vehicles are Michelin X-Ice XI 2 or Nokian Hakkapellitta 5
If you have a performance vehicle, the best winter tire is the Nokian WR G2
Consumer Reports tests the hell out of things...they are seldom wrong. Their high opinion of Nokian tires is backed up by first-hand knowledge, and feedback I've gotten from several people I know in town who have them (there are plenty of heavy snowfalls where I live every winter).

You need to know the second number as well because that is the height; the first number is the width in millimeters; the second number is a percentage of width that the sidewall is to the tire so say it is a 175/45R16 That means the side wall is 45% as tall as the width of the tire; you have to take that number into account as well.
