  • Flying

So I'm already shit scared of flying after a terrfying experience I had a week after that Air France crash a few years ago. But, it was still a necessary evil so I would just get hammered and pass out.

But after watching the news a bit lately, it looks like flying is starting to become a serious hassle. Costs are as high as ever, the security is getting ridiculous, you have to let security guards search your junk for bombs, etc. Anyone flown in the past few months?

Its seems like the hassle is starting to outweigh the convenience. (Unless of course you are flying overseas or clear to the other end of the country...)

Just make sure the walk through metal detector doesn't go off and you'll be fine. I am a darkie and I have never been patted down yet. I make absolutely sure that there is no piece of metal on me even by accident - all hell breaks loose if the metal detector goes off because you forgot to take that penny out of our pocket.

I have flown about 3 or 4 times in the past 6 months and haven't had too much trouble. Make no mistake, flying is a major PITA but there's no need to freak out about it. And it is much much safer than driving.

I think Grinder may be referencing the new full body scanners that many airports are getting. The scanners basically take a photo of your naked body with radiation. It increases your chances of devloping cancer minutely, but it stilll does nonetheless. Moreover, someone gets an intimate view of your body, although it is in another room away from the scanner. If you choose not to be scanned, they give you a very thorough ppat down from my reading

when i flew to florida security at BWI and MCO took MAYBE 15 minutes. i got bitched at for not putting my laptop in a separate bin from my shoes. maybe it varies from airport to airport but i didn't have issues and i flew for the first time after 10 years. even my grandfather who was with us didn't take long at security.

the only people that were being patted down were those with implants that set metal detectors off or those people who were in wheelchairs. at both airports the body scanners were actually shut off and taped off to the side.

flying is more then worth it if you are flying cross country or to another country.

if your destination is within a 6-12 hour drive away (1-2 hour flight), i would drive.

but then again i like driving, everytime i have a long drive i pretend i am part of a top gear challange. lmao

I think the increased cancer risk is less than what you'll get through radiation at high altitude, so the scanner is the least of my worries as far as radiation is concerned. The privacy concerns are real though.

I fly a reasonable amount for my work. In my experience it is very simple:

                  1. Put your laptop in a separate tray.
                  2. Take off your shoes.
                  3. Put all your liquids in a quart ziploc bag and put it in a tray with your shoes.
                  4. Remove EVERY piece of metal you could have on you - wristwatch, coins, keys, phone, belt, ring, etc. before walking through the detector.

Most of these rules have been in place for a long time and while I occasionally forget to remove my ziploc bag with my toiletries, I've never been scanned.

Unless you have some metal implants, pacemakers, etc. you'll make it through without incident.

                        Blow my fat meat sausage.

It's not a depressing news story. It's just black and white facts regarding the changes in policy. And yes, full body scans and having to be searched like a perp is much different than 5 years ago. And if you decline to have either search you go to jail and/or recieve a $10,000 fine.
