  • Found a Puppy Mill Today

I was at a DIY car wash today, and I kept hearing dogs barking, crying and howling. It sounded like tons of them! We are in the south, so its not an uncommon thing. But one had a weird whining howl, so I got curious. I drove next door to a carpet outlet. From behind their building, you could see a fence with 10 ft tall boards all around it. I got a little closer, and found a break in the boards. My suspicion was confirmed. About 20-30 puppies in about 4 or 5 wire crates raised off of the ground. The puppies were mostly beagles.

I called the local humane society, and they said I had to call animal control to investigate whether the dogs were in poor condition. Unfortunately they are only open Monday through Friday. I searched a little bit, and apparently Puppy Mills are 100% legal in South Carolina and aren't even regulated or inspected.

I'm considering calling the Sherrif's office, but I doubt they will be able to do anything. I'd imagine they'd have to have some kind of proof the dogs were being mistreated to actually get in their back yard and look around.

Not sure if there is even anything I can do at this point. Shit sucks....

i don't know if they can seeing puppy mills are 100% in SC but in MD if there is even a sign of an animal being in distress they reserve the right to question the owner and i think they can ask to see the animal. either way, it's shitty someone would do that.

I'm going to go by there sometime today and see if I can get a better look at the dogs. The few I saw up close didn't look malnourished or anything, just miserable. I'll all animal control when they open on Monday regardless. If any of the dogs look sick I'll go ahead and call the sherrif's office today.

                Here's to hoping I don't get shot! :)

Took the words right outta my mouth, if people saw something like that up here they would probably crashed their car right into the store owners house then proceeded to choke them to death wearing a dog costume.

Quick update. I went by the house again this weekend and there were still multiple pups in wire cages with no protection from the weather, etc. I still couldn't get a good enough view to see what kind of condition the dogs were in.

I went ahead and called animal control and reported it this morning. I was pleasantly surpised at how much detail they asked me for regarding the situation. I was afraid they would just say, "we will look into it" and hang up. They asked me about what I saw, conditions, what view points from around the house you can see into the yard, etc. So I have a good feeling they will at the very least make sure the dogs are healthy, even if they can't just shut down the operation.
