I was at a DIY car wash today, and I kept hearing dogs barking, crying and howling. It sounded like tons of them! We are in the south, so its not an uncommon thing. But one had a weird whining howl, so I got curious. I drove next door to a carpet outlet. From behind their building, you could see a fence with 10 ft tall boards all around it. I got a little closer, and found a break in the boards. My suspicion was confirmed. About 20-30 puppies in about 4 or 5 wire crates raised off of the ground. The puppies were mostly beagles.
I called the local humane society, and they said I had to call animal control to investigate whether the dogs were in poor condition. Unfortunately they are only open Monday through Friday. I searched a little bit, and apparently Puppy Mills are 100% legal in South Carolina and aren't even regulated or inspected.
I'm considering calling the Sherrif's office, but I doubt they will be able to do anything. I'd imagine they'd have to have some kind of proof the dogs were being mistreated to actually get in their back yard and look around.
Not sure if there is even anything I can do at this point. Shit sucks....
