  • Looking for new TV advice

OK.. finally thinking about retiring my rear projection TV (purchased in 2000) and getting into the 21st century...

What is the latest on TV brands/models? Is LED the way to go? I am looking for 55 inch or greater. What should I look for to make it as forward compatible to upcoming technologies as possible?

Go with LED. yes its expensive, but they're worth it

Also, what does 3D-ready mean? Is it worth considering?

apparently at some point things are going 3D, kind of like how tv went HD. soon they'll be making movies in 3D and being 3D ready is being ready for that shift. i don't see a point in it though because you'd have to sit with glasses on to watch those movies. such a stupid idea. though it wouldn't hurt if you have younger kids or you like that stuff. sony is already developing movies in 3D. but you'd also need a 3D ready dvd player too.

not a fan of 3D. For the price difference, its not worth it. You're better off with a LED

No, I am just asking about a "3d-ready" TV. You can add a 3D transmitter and glasses later if needed. I am wondering if in the future, there will enough 3D content to make this worth it. It is kinda like HD-ready 10 years ago. There wasn't much HD content back then but now of course, it is everywhere.

            This one caught my eye:

            Amazon.com: Sony BRAVIA KDL55HX800 55-Inch 1080p 240 Hz 3D-Ready LED HDTV, Black: Electronics

At 2000 bucks, it is less than what I paid for my 57" RPTV.

Also, I understand that LED may be the way to go, but what's the next best? DLP or LCD? DLP is about 1/2 the price of LED, so I was wondering if the difference is really that compelling.

LCD is below LED. Below all that is DLP.

I actually bought a DLP 2 years ago. It was a 65" for $1100. Why would you give that up? lol

I'd go with one these. I have a Toshiba led lcd and I love it.

                  Sony - BRAVIA / 55" Class / 1080p / 240Hz / 3D LED-LCD HDTV - KDL-55HX800

DLP is crap old technology go with either LED or LED back lit LCD. and tell you the truth while I was out shopping for my tv I stood there and watched everything on the wall for a good 15, 20 mins and I didn't notice any difference that made one tv considerably better then the other one, especially when you go in to full 1080p with 240hz department.

Yeah.. I never jump into purchases like that. I usually go to the other extreme - research every purchase inside and out before pulling the trigger.

I keep hoping for this stupid 3D craze to end soon. Stupid Avatar lead the fucking hype train all the way to 3Dville.
