  • Should Pit Bull Owners Need a License?

I've been pondering this all day. There have been A LOT of Pit Bull attacks in the past few months around my parts. So many that there is serious talk of banning the breed in my area. The thought of this pisses me off so bad, because I have been around plenty of pit bulls in my life, and owned one. I have never met more loyal and obedient dogs, as they were trained right, not around a lot of other smaller breeds, never around small childeren unsupervised, etc.

I know there are a lot of current Pit Bull owners on this forum. What do you guys think? IMO this would make sure the breed stays in good hands. (With people that know something about these animals and can properly train and care for them.) And I would hope it would make it a little more difficult for the people who only want to own them for the "image" aspect, or worse.

I really hope something like this is thought of before they start banning and confiscating these dogs around here...

In my county they are pretty much banned already you can have them in the county but not in the city limits. The problem is these dogs get in the hands of the wrong people. I think there should be some kind of restriction but how the hell you gonna tell someone what kind of dog they can or can't have. Its a bad deal all the way around for the dogs man. I want to breed my female in the spring but I'm concerned with what I'm gonna do if she has a bunch of pups you know I don't wanna sell them to people who are irresponsible or just down right mean. I never let my dog around my kid and rarely let her run loose just when no one is around but I live on a farm so its a lil different. People are the problem not the dogs

the owners should have to get a license for themselves. just like when you drive a car, you have to get a license. its not the car that could potently hurt or kill someone, its the driver.

same goes for any "dangerous breed" rotties, bull mastiffs, dobs, etc...

Why have a dog you can't have it around your kids? There is no way I would ever have a dog if I had to worry about it being around my kids. No way! My kids come first. My dog is a solid 90 pounds. Very protective. But is very gentle to me and my family. If he would ever show any type of aggression to anyone one in my family… I would be looking for a new home for him.

I love pits. Beautiful bread. But unfortunately most have been bread for the wrong reasons.

Mine has never shown any aggression towards my kid I just don't take the chance that goes for any dog in my book.

You know the best natured dog I ever owned was a Brittany Spaniel. My Dad bought one for bird hunting but never really did anything with her and I ended up with her. She was the smartest dog just had a great personality. I gave her to a family that wanted a good kid dog she was perfect

Pretty much all in agreement I guess. Of course the ignorance is rampant so I doubt we will see any restrictions or licenses needed. It's going to go straight to banning these breeds in more and more counties. Totally takes away from the responsible owner who wants to own the dog for the right reasons.

I also think all breeders should be licensed, no matter the breed. The dog and cat overpopulation problem is pathetic.

I say yes, that way people are made to be responsibe, your dog attacks someone, you get investigated, possibly have your licence revoked. Iy you then go get another pit bull and it attacks someone else, there's no saying it was the dogs fault and shrugging your shoulders, you pay a huge fine or get put in jail. See how fast the rate of attacks drops, no ifs, no buts, you get a dangerous dog its your problem you chose to take on, not everyone elses. On a different subject I also hate those people that don't clean up shit on the sidewalk

Dogs can be trained but only to a point If the dog comes from a fighting line its probably gonna fight thats just in its DNA.
as far as banning them that is silly and stupid. You can just call your american pit bull a staffordshire terrior simple as that. Pit bulls get bad news press but if some one takes the time to look up dog bites pit bulls wont be on the top of the list I forget what is but not pits. Its all media hype that gets the world in a panic. just like the swine flu bull shit media blows it up and everyone freaks out

I agree. But you forgot to include the most dangerous breed known as "children" in your list

Well said bottom line is these dogs are bred to be game and not everyone should have one but not everyone should have a 9mm either...
