  • America's Second MOst Dangerous City to Layoff Half of Its Police

I forsee Camden reclaiming its title next year

Camden City Council unanimously votes to lay off cops - NYPOST.com

The Camden, NJ, City Council yesterday unanimously approved layoffs for 400 city workers -- half of which will be cops and firefighters -- in a move that could deal a severe blow to the already crime-ridden city.

Camden, which routinely ranks as one of the most dangerous cities in the country, will lose about the half of its current police force.

"We'll start buying weapons because I don't see any choice," shop owner Carmen Villegas, 65, told The Philadelphia Inquirer.

"We're going to have to defend ourselves. We're going to have to defend our families."

The measure -- which eliminates approximately a quarter of the city's employees -- was passed to plug a $26.5 million budget deficit.

City officials said the staff cuts could be reduced if unions offer additional concessions by Jan. 18, when the pink slips are slated to go out.

City Council President Frank Moran said reduced funds from the state left them with no choice.

my professor is an ex philly cop and said that it was only a matter of time. law enforcement was always open to hiring people and did so blindly because they figured that the academy would single people out but more and more people would finish and increased the police for dramatically. now they are realizing that they are paying (literally) big time for all these officers and many times they have many more on duty than necessary.

i'm not saying this is a good thing, some places need extra policing and laying off half of the force is not going to benefit anyone but the governments should be careful with their hiring process.
