We fucked that up, but that doesn't mean the world would be perfect without us.
We weren't MEANT to be anything. We're just another organism that has come along the tree of evolution. Of course, we are the first ones who have had the ability to influence our environment in a significant way, as opposed to be influenced by it but I think any notion that were were destined to be this or that is anthropomorphic arrogance.

We were meant to be it's caretakers?

I am pretty sure earth was here long before humans. We live on this planet in a very small window that permits life. Earth didn't always support life and it won't in the future. You give far to much credit to the human race. We are simply a guest here.
