Dress shirts

So I am increasing my wardobe due to holiday specials. I am curious on everyone's opinions.

The shirts I plan on getting will be straight collar or Euro straight collar. I plan on buying four (max allowed in the deal).

My questions involve button v. french cuff and monograms. I want to look professional and be dressed to impress without seeming pretentious when I interview for jobs/internships. So what do you guys think. Which cuff and should I get a monogram on the shirts (either left cuff or on pocket)?

Depends. If you are going to wear it for interviews, then no french cuffs. If you are going to wear them socially, then by all means, french cuffs. I wouldn't wear french cuffs for a conservative profession like law.

Also, invest some money on good shoes. Allen Edmonds Park Avenue is a standard shoe that everyone should start with. If the last doesn't work with your foot shape, consider the Fifth Avenue model.

DO NOT get some crummy square toed piece of shit with rubber soles. Best way to ruin an ensemble....

I have wide feet, so buying shoes is always an issue with me. Some Bostonians work. I have never tried Edmonds Park Avenue before so I may have to take a look at them

Bostonians were great years ago, but they are generic pieces of shit these days, made in China or some other East Asian sweatshop. Burning them is too good a fate for the damn things.

For your first shoe get a captoe balmoral - The Allen Edmonds Park Avenue is the standard bearer for this style. The Fifth Avenue is very similar but is on a different last, so depending on your foot shape, one may be more comfortable than the other. Luckily they are available in EE and EEE, so you can try them out. It can either be in black (most conservative) or merlot. Merlot works very well with charcoal and navy suits (which are the only allowed colors to start off) and are less boring then black, but you can't go wrong with black either.

You can then augment your shoe collection with some wingtips (lots of Allen Edmonds models) for a slightly more casual look and some bluchers which are a bit more casual as well in either captoe or wingtip.

You should get 2 or 3 pairs and rotate them. Don't wear the same shoe every day. It is the surest way to wear them down. If you rotate shoes, there's no reason why they shouldn't last for 10 years or more. This will obviously take time to acquire as these shoes are typically expensive - be prepared to spend north of $200 for them. You have to watch for sales and also get on the Allen Edmonds mailing list - they sometimes have blemishes or online sales with big discounts.

BTW, most American shirts are sized for fatasses whose hips are wider than their shoulders. It looks like I am wearing a poncho when I put on an off-the-rack shirt. Plus, the sleeves are wide enough for me to slip my thighs into them. :noo:

I always take my new shirts to a tailor to have the sides taken in, the armholes raised and the sleeves narrowed. They then fit like a glove and really show the taper of the torso. It only costs me about $15 to do this modification and I highly recommend it.
