I was going to say the same thing - if you just want something that gets you into the mountains and stuff, an AWD car would do just as well and will be a lot cheaper to operate. However, if you need clearance because you really go offroading, then it's a different story.

That's true... I was thinking more like a Jeep or something. Moreover, if I spent the kind of money to get a Merc SUV, I would be too scared to take it anywhere offroad for fear of a scratch from a tree branch brushing against the body or whatever. I would get a used SUV whose paint job will not be something I would agonize over.
