FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — When New York Jets return man Santonio Holmes realized he could not catch the first punt of last Saturday's AFC wild-card playoff game at the Indianapolis Colts, he made an unorthodox decision that said much about him and one of the brashest and most controversial teams in NFL history.
Holmes, surrounded by defenders, was seemingly so sure of himself that he defied the conventional wisdom of getting away from the ball since any contact could easily result in a turnover. He instead allowed it to roll through his legs, a high-risk maneuver.
It was the latest in many questionable judgments by the Jets, who have run afoul of the law, the league, the politically correct and those who abhor foot fetishes even as they advanced to Sunday's divisional playoff showdown with the New England Patriots.
Owner Woody Johnson makes no apologies for the turbulence of a ride that saw the Jets soar to 12-5 when they eked out a 17-16 win vs. the Colts.
"We are who we are. We're not like anybody else, and we're not trying to be like anybody else," Johnson said during an interview at the team's executive offices. "We'll be successful, or not, using that frame of mind going forward."
