Former Rutgers student testifies about paddling by sorority members | mycentraljersey.com | MyCentralJersey.com

A former Rutgers University student who leveled a hazing complaint against six Rutgers sorority women last year testified Friday that she was paddled at Rockoff Hall in New Brunswick as a pledge for Sigma Gamma Rho.

Gerri Barker said she was supposed to be hit just seven times.
"They said we had to bow after each time we were hit, but I forgot to do it once or twice," she said in New Brunswick Municipal Court. "My buttocks was stinging." (hahahahah)She identified the woman wielding the blue-and-gold paddle as Shawna Ebanks.
Barker described other parts of the initiation ritual, including having their rooms "trashed" and being forced to remain in a squatting position and other difficult stances that she said caused her pain.

"You knew you were involved in joining a sorority, did you not?" Municipal Court Judge E. Ronald Wright asked Barker while she was being questioned by an attorney.

Barker accused the sorority sisters of paddling her more than 300 times outside of New Brunswick as well as paddling other pledges, attorneys said. Wright told attorneys that incidents that took place outside of New Brunswick would not be part of the trial.
Testimony is scheduled to continue in April.

Responding to Barker's testimony against Ebanks, her attorney, Gracia Montilus of Perth Amboy, said, "We feel her testimony is very inconsistent."
Charged along with Ebanks, 22, of East Orange, was Vanessa Adegbite, 22, of Jersey City; Kesha Cheron, 21, of Newark; Ilana Warner, 22, of The Bronx; and Joana Bernard and Marie Charles, both 22 and from West Orange.
The six were initially charged with aggravated hazing in January 2010 after authorities said they paddled as many as seven potential pledges.
In April, however, those charges were downgraded to hazing, a disorderly persons offense, and the case was sent from Superior Court to New Brunswick Municipal Court. That offense can bring six months in jail, but defendants in municipal court usually avoid jail. Gerald Gordon, the New Brunswick attorney representing Adegbite, said the six were cleared of university charges at a Rutgers disciplinary hearing
