Who's talking about responding to 9/11? After 9/11, EVERYONE was on our side. The outpouring of sympathy was pretty much universal.

The way to respond to 9/11 was to focus on Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. We took our eyes off the ball unfortunately and got involved in Iraq and other places. We got to be perceived as having imperialist aims in the area. We rapidly lost all the goodwill that we accumulated after 9/11.

Regardless, your bringing up of 9/11 is a total red herring. Egyptians have been chafing under Mubarak's rule for decades. Long before 9/11... the guy is a total dictator. He has been subjugating his countrymen for years and years. If they chop his head off, he would have got off lightly. The US is fucking up. We keep siding with dictators who have scant regard for their people. It has happened in the Middle East, it has happened in Africa.

Let me repeat:

The more we get in bed with dictators, the more the people are going to hate us. We, of all people, should stay above this. We are the beacon of democracy and it is hypocritical of us to be throwing it all away for realpolitik.

By the way, let me give you my first hand perspective:

Although I am American and have lived most of my life in the US, I was born in India and grew up in my early years there. I still visit every few years and have numerous relatives there. Also, as part of my job, I travel to numerous countries and in my field of work, we hire people of just about every nationality - PhDs come from all over.

This is what I know:

The talking heads who insist that everyone who is anti-American in the 3rd world is so because they hate freedom and the American way of life have nevery stepped foot outside the country and lived in the 3rd world. Because nothing is farther from the truth. In fact the truth is just the opposite.

People in the 3rd world do not hate America. People in the third world LOVE America. People in the 3rd world want to be like America. They have these mythical notions of America where everything is larger than life. It is like Oz to the Munchkins, this amazing place that is in movies and dreams, that few have seen in person, but everyone can imagine. Most of all, they look up to America as the land of opportunity, a place where anyone can succeed through hard work. Believe it or not, this is just a dream in most of the 3rd world.

What they want from America is to help them become like America. A place where they worry less about where their next meal comes from and more about getting an education and bettering themselves. A place where they are confident that the next generation has a better life than they do.

And what do we do? We prop up thugs and despots as the rulers of their lands, crooks who rob their country blind and snuff out whatever little hope the people have for the future. America comes across as this cynical all-powerful ogre that is just as exploitative as the colonial powers from a century ago. No wonder we get the results we do.
