i've been having random shut down issues for a while and after some reading i've come to the conclusion that the task killer is causing this. but would they really do that? i didn't have issues with the task killer and random shut downs until i "updated" to Android 2.2 (Froyo). would an OS update cause problems like that?

and for anyone who has rooted their phone, is it worth the trouble?

From everyone I hear that has rooted their phones they wouldn't have it any other way.

As far as the random shut downs this could easily be a bad interaction between the two, although ive never heard of it. Try reinstalling the task killer. If that doesnt work then try reinstalling the os. If that doesn't work ditch the phone and get a new one. :)
