  • Church rant...

My inlaws are not super religious by any means, but they believe in god and all that other garbage. My father in law's cousin is a priest in the area. Me and my wife got married last year by my brother in law (did the online thing), but my inlaws want to have a huge thing which is going to happen next month. My father in law always wanted to walk his daughter down the aisle (side note: aisle looks weird doesn't it?) so we decided to do a renewal of vows ceremony and his cousin will do it at his church. Then have a huge party.

I met with the priest a few months ago, good guy, but very sick so he retired a month ago. We discussed how I was divorced and all that jazz. He told me that for some reason I needed to get a hold of my old marriage license. I asked why and he never gave me a straight answer. He then asked me why i don't go to church and I was very straight and to the point and explained why. Heard later he was surprised at how I didn't hold back lol.

Well we are supposed to meet with him tomorrow to finalize everything and i've been putting off getting the paper because I have to travel like 20 mins in the middle of the day to get it. Today I looked online to find out how to get it. Turns out I have to drive to the Department of Health to get it and will cost me $45. He still never gave me a good reason that they need it either.

$45 for some piece of paper that is null and void and is not necessary for a renewal of vows ceremony. Yeah fuck that noise.

just show up without it and say "sorry, didnt have time but did look it up and saw that its not needed anyway so lets get the show on the road unless you want to pay the $45 and go pick it up father"

That's what I plan on doing. I tried getting out of getting it before when I couldn't get hold of anyone in the Town where it was filed.

personally i think this whole thing is a little telling of what you are getting yourself into.

you and your wife did what you guys wanted to do and got married how you wanted.

now her family is pretty much making you and her do it all over FOR THEM and your wife cannot simply tell them no.

        be careful bro...

If someone told me I needed to spend $45 on a worthless piece of paper to satisfy some bullshit they were doing, I'd kick them in the face and walk out the door. The only reason to do it is if would make your wife happy.

That's not entirely true. We had to get married right away for the baby and insurance. we did eventually want a real wedding for her since it is her first and only. So we are not totally doing it for them. We did tell them no, but then realized we're gonna get money if we have one so we said might as well.

I have to call the priest and find out. My wife doesn't know the whole story for the paper and I don't either so she's thinking this will ruin things. If it's for some bullshit then I definitely wont get it.

there is something shady about the priest lingering on a previous marriage. that's just the feeling i get. and if he wanted to make sure you were in fact divorced from your previous wife he would have asked for divorce papers.

yea, sounds like her family is using the priest as a private investigator to me.

kill off the family, dump your wife and give your kid away just to be sure.

For it to be cheap enough we did. We looked into the other routes and either we didn't qualify or it was way too expensive.
We tried getting the money for the wedding but found what we will get in gifts will be more and we are having a party.

I did give the divorce papers. He explained it's the diocese that wants proof i wasnt married in a church or by a priest. He doesn't even get why they need that info because we aren't technically getting married.

If a prieat presided over your ceremony before then the church logs have you as married. If there is a divorce sometimes it isn't removed from their logs or wont be removed from there logs. In a case where divorce is allowed then they need to make sure their books are straight before marrying you in front of" god" if divorce isn't allowed then the priest can not renew vows because god doesn't recognize divorce since a church marriage is a life vows.

Then you need to rekindle your marriage to your ex wife so you can do right by the church.
