Interesting, I didn't realize that VY Canis Majoris is now considered the largest star known. I had thought that it was Epsilon Aurigae B, but I went back and did some digging and discovered that Epsilon Aurigae B has actually been verified in 2005 to be a large cloud of dust by the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) telescope.
