Interesting article in the NY Times today.

Because the player's union decertified, they are afraid to start talks back up because the decertification looks like a sham and they lose their bargaining chip.

The league is afraid to talk to the player representative,because if they do, it looks like they are saying the decerification (which they are fighting in court) is legal.

So both are trying to cover their own asses currently, while awaiting the April 6 ruling

Rugby is crap? Badass hits, slick ball handling, forwards who can actually run 100 meters without getting gassed.....Rugby has the best elements of football at breakneck pace for 80 minutes without commercials. What's there not to like?

Maybe you are thinking of Australian Rules? Rugby is awesome - played in England, South Africa, New Zealand as well. Australia is not particularly good at it although they have had some good years. New Zealand is the best.
