Trump brings media blitz to NBC, ‘steamrolls’ Meredith Vieira on birther issue - Yahoo! News

As reports that Meredith Vieira is planning an exit from NBC's "Today Show" swirl, the anchor has sparked controversy over her failure to question a number of unsubstantiated challenges to the U.S. citizenship of President Barack Obama that Donald Trump floated in an interview with Vieira this morning.

Trump--the billionaire real estate tycoon and reality TV figure who is flirting with a 2012 presidential run--again sought to suggest that Obama was not born in the United States. "Birther" activists on the right have circulated the unsubstantiated claim in an effort to depict Obama's presidency as the outgrowth of a shadowy, constitutionally illegitimate conspiracy.

The birther position has been thoroughly debunked, and it hasn't gained traction within the journalistic mainstream. But Trump has nonetheless been on a media blitz in recent weeks promoting it.

When the issue came up on "Today"--which airs on the same network as Trump's "Celebrity Apprentice"--Vieira didn't exactly hold his feet to the fire.

"His grandmother in Kenya said he was born in Kenya and she was there and witnessed the birth," said Trump, reiterating a claim that has been proven false, as Vieira sat by silently. (You can watch the exchange in the clip above.)

    Critics took note.

"Trump simply steamrolled over her challenges, for instance, on Hawaii's policy as to what birth documents it makes available," writes Time's James Poniewozik. "But she also let him make the claim that Obama's grandmother said she saw him born in Kenya--an old, and long-debunked, chestnut of birthers that ranks up there with the fake Mombassa birth certificate--without questioning it. So now millions of Today viewers are invited to take it as fact."

A spokeswoman for the "Today Show" did not respond to a request seeking comment on whether Vieira felt that she had adequately pressed Trump on his claims. But judging by how some of her peers in TV news have handled Trump in the same situation, she appears to have failed.

Take, for instance, conservative Fox News host Bill O'Reilly, who had Trump on his prime time show several weeks ago, and was well prepared to spar with his guest on the birther issue.

"There were two announcements the week [Obama] was born [in his native Hawaii] in both Honolulu newspapers saying that he was born. That is impossible to make happen if he had not been born in the hospital," said O'Reilly, incredulously. "What is he, baby Jesus? There was a sophisticated conspiracy to smuggle that baby back into the country?"

Fuck Trump, just an idiot with a political agenda.

I do not believe Obama was born on American soil, but at this point in the game...FUCK IT. He can run a campaign, but can't run an office. He is also great at taking vacations. The rumored candidates for the next election all look to be a group of fuck ups again. This shit will never end.

What's wrong with requiring proof that he was born on US soil, as is required by the rules that are supposed to govern your presidential election? Barack Obama has never produced a birth certificate....FACT. Political posturing by the dems allowed him to skirt on by that little detail when it was obvious he had a chance to win.

I can see a proof of eligibility for presidential candidates ammendment being made to your federal laws as a result of this whole fiasco. It should always have been there in black and white, written in terms that provide no possibility for leeway.

Barack Obama has been a fucking joke as a leader and his bumbling has made the recession far worse than it had to be. This bothers me as a Canadian because while our economy has fared far better than the USA due to competent leadership, we benefit even further from a strong US economy...and Barack has fucked it up not just now but going foreward with his reckless spending.

Define reckless spending and when it starts. Bush started the whole too big to fail so let us pay the bankers money who crashed the economy because they are the only ones who can get us out.

And I do believe that during a recession, government spending is to be encouraged. Do restrict it is to cause what happend to Japan in the late 90s

The big one is Obamacare: the LAST THING you do when you are in a shit economy and are already on the hook for the looming social security crisis is sign on for a new entitlement that costs massive amounts of money each and every year. In order to have socialized medicine, you need a solid tax base and a stable economy...and Obama and the libtards don't want to shore up that tax base by sealing off the Mexican border and ending the ridiculous anchor baby policy. Anchor babies are decimating your public school system already in the south; for every kid whos parents pay taxes to support his education, there are multiple children of illegal mexican immigrants who DO NOT PAY TAXES. So the money gets diluted down further and further, until everyone gets a shit education from understaffed schools without adequate learning materials. Obama WANTS these people flooding in and breeding like rats, because those kids when they are of age are the ones that VOTE DEMOCRAT. He's selling out the children of hard-working Americans to build up the future Dem voting base, and if you can't see it you are blind. In the meantime, those illegals go to hospitals and use emergency services (since there are bullshit laws preventing emerg rooms from turning away those who can't pay legal or not)...they are the ones that ensure socialized medicine can't work in the USA like it does in most other advanced countries; they strain the funding for healthcare (along with their childred until they are legal adults) much like the childred are currently screwing the education system. Not to mention your rate of people on welfare is much too high.

A nanny-state type system only works if the vast majority of the users are taxpayers, and Obama is TOO FUCKING STUPID to acknowledge that fact and abandon his ridiculous entitlement creation/expansion agenda. All he is doing is pandering to the traditional Dem voter base...his vision is not based in economic reality.

Oh, and his bullshit idea to give money and create jobs through infrastructure grants LIMITED TO HIGH SPEED RAIL. Not only are these projects proven to be money-losing endeavors over time to most states (they all did studies)....they also found out that NOBODY IN THE USA COULD DO THE JOB; US companies have not even looked at railway technology since mid-century. All the bids for those projects came from Europe and Asia; the big money would go overseas, and the only US jobs created would be the low-paying manual labour jobs associated with the projects. Obama JUST DOESN'T GET IT; almost every one of his initiatives is woefully misguided.

Carbon taxing to handicap US companies even more than they already are versus their global competition is another example; unless everybody else does it, you simply CANNOT force it on US companies and cripple them with added costs above what their global competitors are paying. Doing so would be suicide for the few manufacturing and energy companies left on US soil that have survived.

                Get the picture yet?

I agree our immigration problem is out of control. I am neither liberal/democrat nor conservative/republican. What I am is analytical and pragmatic. That being said, I believe Obamacare to have noble intent but lack of means to control costs is important.

As you state, there is no way in the current bill to keep costs do. It will keep American citizens from using the ER for common problems, but not illegals. And costs in Canada are by no means cheap. I had an incident in Montral when I was younger. The less than a mile ambulance ride cost $750 Canadian in 2004. So the costs in Canada are up there as well.

As for the infrastructure, I do not know enough to about it to speak. But what reckless spending is still my question outside the infrastructure. From what I have read, anyway you spin Obamacarem it saves money from the current way. How much seems to be the key. Some analysis has said it cut costs, while others say it simply slows down the increase in medical payments.

A common problem is never a reason to go to the ER. Most people that go to the ER are addicts trying to get 12 pain pills, they get a government check each month, free ER visit, and pay 50 cents for that medicine. The majority of people using ER are fucking government babies. The real people that have an EMERGENCY(the "E" in ER) are forced to wait forever to see a doctor. The entire system is fucked. These fucks go to the ER for a stomach ache............back ache...........tooth ache..............nothing like a free life.

A common problem is no reason to go to the ER. But if one lives in poverty, with no health insurance, the ER is the place to go for charity care.
