  • Email account hacked

Anyone else ever have this happen before? One of my accounts was hacked late last night. Do not believe it to be a virus as I have four different accounts between school, personal, professional, and a junk email address. Only the personal one was compromised.

    How was it hacked?

Do you share a computer/laptop with anyone?

I'm unsure of how it was hacked. It is my personal laptop. I have signed into the email addresses from school before. But only one was compromised. I changed the password and ran a scan on my laptop. Everything seems to be fine as of now

my hotmail accounts were hacked. i mean, i stopped using them ages ago and i didn't have any personal information coming to those but i know the feeling. i just use them for junk now. seems like the MSN spam filters are crappy anyway.

Changing my password stopped the junk mail. My other accounts are fine.

I have a crap email address that I use for mailing lists and the like in order to avoid this shit. But talking to my friend, he said some prgrams are designed to simply run an email address and try multiple passwords until one sticks

i've heard similar things. you need to be super careful with email addresses, especially with online banking and finances. you'd be surprised how many bank accounts have been drained with an email address.

Hopefully the damage wasn't that bad. I have never experienced that, i am very careful when it comes with personal email addresses i care about.

the weak password I will agree with. It has been the same since I created the account about years ago. It was only 6 letters. It is a fucking sentence now

Same thing happened to my friend this morning. We both have credti cards whose email addresses were stolen a couple of months ago. Seems to chase's fault

That I do not. But I was reading about it. Here is an article about what I was affected by. The fact that only my email address that was connected to my credit card was breached makes me pretty sure it was because of the below attack

Stolen email addresses: Banks, credit-card issuers, retailers warn of data breach - SiliconValley.com

SAN FRANCISCO -- Security experts said Monday that millions of people were at increased risk of email swindles after a giant security breach at an online marketing firm.

The breach exposed the names and email addresses of customers of some of the nation's largest companies, including JPMorgan Chase, Citibank, Target and Walgreens.

While the number of people affected is unknown, security experts say that based on the businesses involved, the breach may be among the largest ever. And it could lead to a surge in phishing attacks -- emails that purport to be from a legitimate business but are intended to steal information like account numbers or passwords.
