Microsoft issues phishing scam alert for Xbox LIVE users | WinRumors

Microsoft issued an Xbox LIVE security alert on Wednesday.

The alert warns of potential phishing attempts via game specific messaging features in titles such as Modern Warfare 2. The software giant says it’s “aware of the problem and are working to resolve the issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience.” Microsoft has taken steps to disable the matchmaking features of several titles to protect users.

The security alert comes just hours after Sony admitted that an external intrusion into its PlayStation Network may have revealed customers personal information, including credit card numbers. Sony is currently investigating the attack and has engaged with a third-party security firm to assist the firm.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console is currently the most popular selling console in the United States. Microsoft revealed at CES in January that the company has sold over 50 million Xbox 360 consoles worldwide since launch. Microsoft has 30 million active Xbox LIVE members.
